We Gave Them More Space... 9 Days Later, It Was FULL!! #beekeeping

We gave these beehives more space, came back just nine days later, and apparently the bees had taken that personally... 😂

An incredible basswood honey flow had them drawing comb, packing honey supers, and filling nearly every available cell faster than we could add boxes. Come see what happens inside a honey bee colony when the nectar flow is truly ON and why our 2026 honey harvest was shaping up to be one for the books!

Happy for you that all of the risks that you have taken have worked out to the massive honey harvest that you have enjoyed this year.

I still have canola honey coming in .Sept 1st
Its not a good thing this late . Its hard to treat mites and makes fall feeding rushed we need to get all the canola out of the hives so it delays fall work .
Space extra space .
A good double here needs 4-6 empty supers and we never use excluders(honey crop reducers ) during honey flows .
Brood in the 3rd or 4th can be moved into a small hive or down or for splits .
Susan puts extra wax on waxed new foundation and the bees draw it out way faster .

I store supers on pallets standing on their sides with a gap between each super so the wind and sunshine can get in. Wax moths don't like sunshine and a breeze so they leave them alone. Once the first frost comes, I stack them up like you have them now.

I use cheese wire cutter and heat gun. Heating the cheese wire cutter helps too. We keep extras in almost boiling water. Location of resources makes a lot of difference. Less fly time for bees.

Flow was awesome in west Michigan

Looking forward to the honey harvest video! Basswood was weird for me here in western NY - I have a number of large, old trees on my property that were full of flowers - but I hardly saw any bees on them. Maybe they weren't producing much nectar but conditions seemed pretty ideal. I did harvest some honey last week (my first, hooray) and can't tell if there is a dominant source. Tastes like a lot of clover but not pure clover. Just a summer mix of some kind.

Our rhubarb and red creeping thyme also produced heavy along with the orchard and basswoods. The clover cover crop in orchard bloomed great too. Record low mites this year too. I use Lazutin hives. 15 double deep frames. I let them rob frames after honey extracted. Then freeze them. And add divider board for winter. This year I ran out of space in 3 of my hives.

Comforting to see your car is just as messy as mine.😂

Funny about playing with plants in traffic. My father is a botanist. When I was a child, he would wake me up early every Saturday morning and take me to the woods well before the sun came up and we’d collect plants for his college projects. He taught me all the scientific names of all the native plants. This is how I fell in love with bees at such a young age. I’d watch them in the clover for hours.

On vacation, he would come to a screeching halt on the highway because he would spot some plant 100 yards in the middle of a cow pasture that he wanted to study and add to his collection. Drove mom crazy. Lol

Sounds like Charles should have sent his hives with you.

Emily, I believe the summer model is that forager bees bring nectar and give it to the nurse bees (they do not do cell unloading). Nurse bees place it next to the brood for immediate feeding needs. At night the honey is brought up higher for long term storage. If no storage is available, the broodnest fills with honey and the swarming instinct kicks in. That's partially why making upper entrances does not matter, because the receiving bees are all located in the bottom brood box. Case and point, Ian's bees all bring in honey in the bottom, with 5 boxes on top, Since honey migration happens at night, it does not really matter if you bottom super or top super, it's done during the inactive flight time of the day. Around 14 minute time you are discussing that they store honey all over, but it seems your brood is all over too in that hive, so totally makes sense.

When you start using queen excluders it will take longer to get the first supers started, because they wlll be using the bottom box to store the honey. You can tease them up thru the excluder by placing brood in the second box, or you can let them start filling second box with honey and place the excluder once they are committed. They will use a lot of real estate and honey to raise brood if you leave it unrestricted, excluders really help keep things tidy.

We use metal key word metal 9 frame spacers in our honey supers .adding honey supers is fast you can add them three at a time if you can carry them and you dont need to stop to space them
Open your whole yard Add supers put on cover go back for more .
9 frame boxes hold more honey than 10 .
8 frame honey supers tend to be hard on the frames if you arent very gentle handling them .

They need light and air flow to deter the moths, alternating them as you stack them under a pole barn or under a lean too.
Look how Bruce Bees store them or Mr. Ed😮. They both use the same method as I.
Congratulations on the season you guys are having

Thanks for the video 😊. How much did you grow how many took this year 😊

Emily just a suggestion why not use the excluders and set the honey box back that would keep the brood down and not stop the production. or slow it down. I learnt this from Gus mitchel it works great I set back every 2nd box the bees do great they can dry the honey good and they produce honey for me. Hope you both have a great week and glad u made a lot of honey

@sotirisfman1917 1 month ago (edited)

realy great to see how bees work out there!!!goodjob!!! cant be the same here in greece in thyme... how theese towers are made?? how mane days this corp lasts? thyme lasts only 30 days... you can draw.. you can put supers... here even in double brood with a super the honey splits in frames but the less space u force them down the most honey they can produce... so many diferences... is it possible u think in a 30 day period corp? good morning mate!!

@gregwaskom552 4 weeks ago

You should be adding more boxs so they have room for storage. So they dont fill the brood nest your limiting your honey yield

I have a grain bin. Have about 400 mid/deep supers stored.

@lenturtle7954 1 month ago

We never let them rob .ever . Or bulk feed
We wet them down by spraying stacks with a garden hose while on the truck and puting them back on the hives they clean them immediately and move the honey down or by stackin 12 high in a covered un heated shed once extracted Some use sea cans for storage or use worn out covered semi trailer s
You can get old 50 foot decommisioned trailers cheap.
Sea cans rock because once you dont want it any more they are easy to sell .
