Looks like he’s speaking from the set of Saving Private Ryan

OF COURSE Ralph Mcquarrie designed the mother-ship in Close Encounters. Who else? Mcquarrie and Syd Mead need to be awarded posthumous Oscars for literally conceptualizing nearly the entirety of visual motif and aesthetic in 70's/80's science fiction movies. SW/CE3/Blade Runner wouldn't be fixtures in the cultural zeitgeist without them.

The level of physical labor required to create the incredible effects are so under-appreciated in our modern CGI world. I mean, just wow. thank you!

Steven Spielberg - on how he got child actor Cary Guffey to react, by using a clown and a guy in a gorilla suit, "...you can't do that again - its ONE TAKE". CLASSIC!

The Air Traffic Control room scene may be one of the best scenes Speilberg has ever shot. It has everything, great sound, great lighting, great blocking and staging and great acting, mostly by real ATC guys.

These special effects guys are sooooo damn creative! I miss the old days of models and imagination. I can totally do without CGI and AI. :(

The little orbs that came ahead of the ship are the automated reconnaissance craft for the mothership. They transition from pure light to solid mass and back. Figuratively speaking of course.

The casting in this movie was outta the park. Truffaut was the master stroke.

I was invited to a special screening of Close Encounters and it was the first time I was blown away by a film. Thanks for sharing the documentary.

This was fantastic! I actually had the honor and privilege of being at the very first showing on the very first day at the Cinerama Dome (in Hollywood, California) of this film. Big fan ever since!

A lot of younger people don’t realize that this was before movie rentals and VHS this movie was so popular that after it left the theater they brought it back like I believe it was a year later to the theaters that’s how popular it was

I’m reflecting on Close Encounters, the first sci-fi movie I saw in the cinema when I was 7, even more now with Spielberg’s Disclosure Day coming out. 🛸👽🖖🏻

Good lord, do you realize that next year, 2027, this film will be 50 years old?

How they shot the ship in the desert is impressive. It totally works. Just a great movie from the terrific opening scene to the mother ship leaving. And that's the movie's strength, just one great scene building the next one in the continuous flow that keeps you in suspense. You're like "What is going on?" the whole time. Just great art of film making.

❤🎉 in 1977 my parents went out to go see the original theatrical release of "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind." Shortly after that, they bought a little BLUE Cassette tape of the Original John Williams motion picture soundtrack masterpiece. And for the next few years, me and my older brother and sister used to play that cassette tape until it was practically worn out!
Then FINALLY while living on the Alaskan Army Base "Fort Richardson" - Anchorage, the NEW Release of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind - The Special Edition" was suddenly playing at the local movie theater!
All I can say is that NEVER in my entire life, (before or since); was I so magically BLOWN AWAY play the movie watching experience! It was the most INTENSE movie watching experience of my entire life. I'll never forget it. The Special Edition for me is very special, because that's what I grew up on. Where it shows Richard Dreyfuss walking up into the mothership, and looking up in breathtaking awe at all the little tiny alien creatures looking back down at him. 🎉❤❤
