The Showtime/SKY TV series "Penny Dreadful" with Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, and Josh Hartnett which ran for three seasons was a SUPERB production of Gothic Horror. The writing was top-notch, with the draw-in of every Victorian literary horror character (while giving each a distinctive adaptation to fit the very intriguing, imaginative plot), and every role (Green's especially) was particularly well-acted, the costumes and sets were exquisitely gorgeous, and there were tons of little subplots and side-quests to keep you invested. An exemplar of what can be done when you have wonderful writers, a flawless, highly-skilled ensemble cast, a novel creative concept, and backing to pull it off!

The Changeling, with George C. Scott - everyone I’ve introduced it to loves it.

Dracula: Yes, I've tortured and impaled thousands of people.

Also Dracula: But I'm searching for my lost love as well. You see, I have a soft side.

I loved Skeleton Key. New Orleans, crumbling mansion, hoodoo vibes…
Eve’s Bayou also fits this aesthetic.

Crimson Peak is so so good. It has scary scenes, it has the dark Gothic mansion, interesting characters, it has the tension of the romance, it has female rage, and it has violence. And the movie just looks so beautiful. Always worth a rewatch.

I don't think it's considered gothic, but it still creeps me out. Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson from 2005. I remember watching it a few times and it always gets me knowing it doesn't have a happy ending.

Bram Stoker's Dracula, "I have crossed oceans of time to find you." Cue the swooning...

Gary Oldham simply disappears into his roles. He is amazing.

When I was a child growing up in the 1960's we watched The Haunting on TV in the dark (our parents had gone out to dinner that night). To this day I don't think anything has ever scared me as much as that film. Also, The Others is one of my favorite ghost movies ever.

The Roger Corman and Vincent Price adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe stories like 'The Fall Of The House Of Usher' and 'The Masque Of The Red Death'!

The Woman in Black is a superb and genuinely scary novel, and was made into a movie which is pretty frightening. I loathe the decision they made to change the ending, but it's got a great gothic vibe: spooky old house out in the marshes; lawyer has to stay there alone to sort the estate; locals with strong accents giving dire hints of nefarious doings.

Great to see a mention of Picnic at Hanging Rock! Gorgeous, deeply unsettling film, and one of the few movie adaptations I've seen that are better than the book.

Props for mentioning "The Haunting" (1963) and "Picnic at Hanging Rock"!

Hi Sinead! I don't know if this qualifies as a Gothic film. "Don't Look Now" (1973) is an adapted short-story by Daphne du Maurier. It stars Donald Sutherland & Julie Christie. A dead child, aparitions, clairvoyant sisters, madness, the dimly lit canals of Venice after dark ...it had me glued to the screen.
