Porco Rosso really is that good.  I've watched countless times.

As a fellow Nausicaa stan (it was my first Ghibli; watched it from a video 8 cassette connected to a CRT), I commend you for keeping the faith 🫡

Wow what a dark ending for a Ghibli Tier list..

TY for the vid stevem!

My favorite thing about Porco Rosso is that Porco being a pig reminds me of how Miyazaki also liked to draw himself as a pig

Coming up next: ranking all Miyazaki manga.
1. Nausicaa
Well, that was quick.

I really enjoyed this discussion! I think it's easy for me as someone who didn’t really grow up woth Ghibli stuff to look at Miyazaki's portfolio especially in the same way i would an old building or something- important/impressive stuff that's kind of always been there. I didn’t really get into them until i was an adult, but they always have this omnipresent reputation to the point where two people who have seen all of them are likely to have different favorites. Awesome video! Appriciated how involved the editing was as well!

I think The Boy And The Heron is Miyazaki making peace with his legacy and also showing faith on the new generations, or at least on the power of young people to make a difference at least in their surroundings, the value of that, even if you can't change the world. And such people will always exist.

Could you make a timeline of the great japanese animators/directors of this period and the chain of influences? For instance, knowing Satoshi Kon was assistant to Otomo makes it clear where his style came from. And Okiura seems to share similarities in his style with Mamoru Oshii. So I think that would be and interesting video.

I was very happy seeing Boy and the Heron at the top <3 Recently I lost a close member of my family, and it has been a very tough time. I feel that all great art are meditations on death, and The Boy and the Heron is very much that for me. Emotional, beautiful, and ends with the possibility of living a wonderful life. Love this film.

Porco Rosso out of all of his films ages the best and only improves with more viewings for maturing minds.
Nausicaa will always be S tier for me, it's a masterpiece.

We all laugh, but proco rosso really is that good.

Hey SteveM, the credits of The Boy & The Heron credits "The Book of Lost Things" yet I haven't seen anyone on YouTube talk about the connections.
They'll mention "How Do You Live", but somehow TBoLT went overlooked.

I like how you can really tell that Stevem is the only one who knows his shit while the Weeb Crew are just your average nerd dudes who opened a podcast lol

I really enjoyed this, you’re really good at podcasting! Nobody can riff anime like SteveM

I love the wind rises but i get why so many people don't

The Wind Rises is my favorite Ghibli film & I have no problem with your guy’s rating. It’s tough to defend.

lovely editing. no slop on your channel, only HQ content!

I think that so many of Miyazaki's fans don't like (ie. totally don't appreciate or understand) The Wind Rises demonstrates it's a film for adults and not children. If you don't know what it's like to be human, you won't like it. If you hate art, you won't like it. If you don't have any sort of understanding of cinema, you won't like it. But if you do, it's the nearest thing to perfection the man has ever made.

Honestly I like them all so the only way the discussion could have pissed me off would have been if you went with the "Totoro is the death god" thing so I'm glad that got shut down real quick.
