Dnd is basically a giant improv game with a combat system

Believe it or not its actually almost completely improv!!!! Mixed in with an amzing storyline of course

The green child with the large dog voices Chuckles

I feel like it’s worth mentioning that the short where she asks Gideon who the last person he killed was and he says the clown, was the moment that Chuckles was created, so all the other chuckles shorts wouldn’t even exist if not for that moment. Glorious.

Chuckles and Bitsy are ALWAYS everyone's favorite characters, Mikey and Derek respectively always manage to come up with the wildest shit

I do believe there are "side-by-side" animations that also show the players that the animation was based from during their session.
But yeah, all the funny bits are improvisation from the players during their sessions.

Chuckles voice is the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. The "Mustard, let's not be silly" quote is the clue.

Matthew lillard was the second cat creature in the last clip you watched. He was a special guest.

Your experience of D&D can vary greatly based on your players and GM. Some are story-based groups, some are combat-heavy adventures, some like a more light-hearted adventure, and others have to be super cereal at all times. And in between these.

17:11 there are a few videos of side by sides of whats actually happening at the table compared to the animated shorts

2:55 Mikey's Chuckles voice is based off of actor Ed Wynn. He did several Disney movies in the 50's and 60's. Most notably he played Uncle Albert in Mary Poppins and the voice of the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

At its core, DnD is just a set of rules about using dice to make decisions on whether you succeed when there is a chance you could do something while you are all playing a pretend adventure together its not the only one but its the most popular. The rulebooks youll need to get started are the players handbook and the dm will need a dungeon masters guide, lastly you will need to get an adventure to play from a campaign book or a one-shot (if you want to try before you buy search anyflip+[book title] to sail the seas with a digital copy). The best chance you have of experiencing dnd like it is shown here is by getting people who you are already comfortable with to play with you..

Disclaimer: As a dnd dm myself, temper your expectations a little bit. It is often funny but you were also right about not every table being the same. These guys have been playing for a long time and they are comfortable roleplaying around each other and riffing of each other almost no table will be like that off the bat. That being said I have only been a dm for2 years or so and I have had an amazing time with so many funny moments like these at my tables despite playing less than once every  two months on average and I only played once before jumping in the dms chair so don't think you need to play a lot to dm if you cant find a friend who wants to take it on.

Chuckle’s voice kind of reminds me of King Candy from Wreck it Ralph

I laugh so hard it hurts everytime I see the mice in the carpet bit

My favorite bit of lore with the cast is that Derek (voice of frost and bitsy, the tiger guy and mouse respectively) went to a clown camp which is why hes so good at improv and also so funny

Legend of Vox Machina tv series is an animated retelling of a d&d groups publicly streamed adventure and shows a more serious side of d&d and yet still has great humor. You could see it and be unaware that it was ever a d&d campaign.

Mikey's chuckle voice is based on the mad hatter from Disney's Alice and wonderland

Bitsy, Chuckles, and Ygor are by far my favorite characters they've come up with.

All of those animations were taken from actual irl shorts.
