Peter Jacksons Forgotten Horror Comedy - The Frighteners

JB's Spooky Review

Before The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson made one of the strangest horror comedies of the '90s. Michael J. Fox sees dead people, Jeffrey Combs loses his mind, and somehow it all works.

Let’s take a look at The Frighteners.

This movie was always a top tier sleepover vhs for me and my friends when we were kids

Wouldn't say it was forgotten.
It's more remembered these days as the movie where Michael J Fox started showing signs of Parkinson's due to memory problems and recall.
He'd been diagnosed in 1991 but kept it secret, and during filming of Frighteners in 1996 he was constantly messing up takes by calling his cast members "Doc", even though it had been 6 years since he'd worked on BTTF.

Bitter sweet movie.

Nice one! You should totally make a video for Dead Alive too! "I kick ass for the LORD!"

I can’t believe I never thought of the 37 clerks joke. Well done sir.

Great black comedy. There's nothing to whine about - solid cast, funny characters, interesting story, lots of dark humour, aged like fine wine special effects. Since the first time I've watched it at my grandpa's home, I often re-watch it and it never bores me. R.I.P grandpa.

I've loved this movie since I first saw it. It used to be a regular rental for me.

Saw this movie when I was eight years old in 1999 watching it with my dad on TV, and I just showed it to my son two weeks ago

Jeffrey Combs was awesome in this! I think it flopped? So undeserved because I've always really enjoyed it.

"Yes, I am an asshole... An asshole with an UZI!!"

This is one of those films that I always end up rewatching at least once per year. So many quotable lines and it's simply hilarious. I've always preferred Peter Jacksons earlier movie over the Tolkien ones...

Great recap! I noticed this was the directors cut, I grew with the theatrical vhs so I was super surprised when I saw this version with all the added scenes.
