Quick bit of context here, Bugs Bunny was probably the first to use Nimrod as part of an insult, when he was taunting Elmer Fudd. He called Elmer Nimrod sarcastically, because Nimrod was a "mighty hunter". The reference was lost to future generations who figured it meant "moron".

God looked down and he was like "dang that Nimrod guy is some hunter I tell you what"

Imagine being an epic icon of history, only for a kids cartoon to end up accidently defining your name as a certified idiot for the rest of history.

“Without any further ado”.
Proceeds to ado further

Had an upperclassman who had Nimrod as his given name.  Always got bullied by his classmates but was really friendly to his juniors.  He's the only guy in my life that I know with that name.

Fun fact: If you spell Nimrod backwards you get Dormin, which in ancient hebrew means absolutely nothing.

"It's Nimrodin' time"
-Nimrod

Strange man in the Bible..."You have an idea how little that narrows it down?"

TL;DR: You can find endless details on him in Hungarian mythology and official royal chronicles - things about him not written elsewhere nowhere! His nam in our language means "conservative" and "not reprimanded"- for those around him who took on new languages, new customs split into nations get rid of "old ways" this is rebellion - so in their language it is. Also if you take the old testaments that part seriously that God was the one who consciously mixed up the one language of humans and there is this guy who tries to keep it....... well if others agree its Gods plan then this seems rebellious..... For us it is staying faithful both to oneself and God.

Little known fact but Hungarian mythology and even the official Hungarian chronicles have EXTRA INFORMATION about Nimrod - who not only was there at the building of Babel, but "at the first sight of seeing languages get confused" - this hints to save the original language as intact as possible - he went on to land of "Evilát" (it is old word for east direction) where he had two sons: Hunor and Magyar. In our mythology he is a very positive hero who is forefather of all Hungarians 🙂

We also often call him "Nemere" or "Mén-Marót" and other names like Nemrót. Also often equating to Orion too.

In some of the tales his wife was a "witch" that for a while he tamed - in others he is doing the most prosperity ever and his name can be understood in Hungarian as Nemrót literally meaning "who was not reprimanded" and the old father who tells the tales and teaches Hunor and Magyar. It is said he has other sons and daughters but because we are from that two brothers as Hungarians and Huns, our story follows with them hunting for the "wonder deer" and ending up on the steppe where they are taking local pricesses as wifes. The language though they probably all keep all throughout.

Interestingly in Hungarian "Marad" (like in case of Marót - which still to this day we have town names like Pilis-marót for example) means "to stay" like to stay faithful. So in Hungarian one of the name meaning is "not reprimanded" and other of his name mean "one who stays (faithful)". If you are very-very conservative here, even in todays language they say you are "Maradi" which means basically like you are Marót..... you are a "stayer" or "keepitthatwayer". So basically again his name in the Hungarian version - and we DO have own separate mythology around him so it counts - also hint that something have happened in Babylon but he wanted to "stay true to old path".

Also Babylon you can also still understand in Hungarian today: Bab Él Hon - small Godhouse or Gods small home or Life's small home. Bcause Él - like Éli how Jesus calls the father - means "life" or living or basically the idea of life personified. I mean literally in everyday use. Other cities around the region bear names known in later Hungarian history like Árpád city, the Ur / uruk literally everyone still understands and it means "lord" / "lords" or powerful ones etc. Meaning they were strong city..... etc .etc... This is well researched but only in Hungary and mostly only in the old chronicles because many people not only dare not to open bible but nowadays people dare not to open any old books, myths and chromicles...

Haven’t heard a zoboomafoo reference in 25 years…

Nimrod means hunter due to the Biblical king's prowess in that area, leading Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to call hunter Elmer Fudd "nimrod" in Looney Tunes. But since Fudd was such a doofus, nimrod came to mean stupid person. That's why it most commonly has that meaning today!

It was Bugs Bunny who referred to Elmer Fudd sarcastically as "Nimrod", but nobody got the joke, and it gained the modern meaning of 'buffoon'

I'm Assyrian and Christian. The language we speak is the language Jesus spoke Aramaic now known as Neo-Aramaic.The word Gabor or Gaborrah depending on the context can mean big, honorable, or even strong. My parents are originally from Iraq, but many Assyrians have left their land because of Christian persecution by terrorists. We are considered the first Christians along with Armenians which is why we suffered so much genocide. My dad's name is actually Ashur and my uncle is named Sargon. It's crazy hearing their names historically. Assyrians are the indigenous people of Iraq/Assyria. The Assyrians that still remain still suffer acts of genocide by radical islamists, but they now have their own Christian army to protect them. It's very sad, but it's reality. A lot of the Babylonian scene art you showed in the video I actually have many replicas of in statue form. Really interesting topic I really enjoyed this video a lot. There's a book called "The Assyrian" that explains the history pretty well.

Got an ad for Mormons before the video. I think thats a sign.

a zoboomafoo reference in this economy??

"Of course, i'm talking about"

"TOOLS FROM HARBOR FRIEGHT"

As a kid I read a DK book covering ancient civilizations and their associated mythologies, one that stood out to me was the Tower of Babel and its note talking about a King Nimrod who arrogantly wished to challenge God, implying the tower would be an arena of sorts for the great hunter to fight in, being destroyed before he could ever try. I dont know where they source that bit from, but its fun to think about. I wish I could remember the name of the book. Perhaps my memory filled in some of that but i do distinctly remember those details.

So fun fact, the "Nimrod = doofus" thing came from Bugs Bunny referring to Elmer Fudd as "a little Nimrod," in reference to the fact that he was a HUNTER, not a doofus. But people didn't catch that and the new meaning took off like a rocket.
