crazy how often that kanye "george bush doesn't care about black people" video is taken as a "kanye west unhinged moments" as a joke and not a real fact.

Katrina took my home in 2005, senior year in highschool a month before I turned 18 ,and I just moved back in my home 2 weeks ago...took 21 years and still have a couple walls to replace. This house is all I have from my grandpa and it's my home. I will not give it up. Pawpaw wouldn't let me even consider it. Crippling PTSD, couldn't start college properly got left behind after the first 9 or 18 weeks. A few of my friends and some family were never seen again after the storm, kinda rambling. May the Heavenly Father be with you

I went to LSU two years after the storm. So many of my classmates had what I'd now say is ptsd. Just fucked up mentally after this.

The coast guard truly has some of the best pilots on the planet. I'm glad at least one arm of our government knows how to save people.

My hometown is about 30 minutes outside of New Orleans. I’ve been through so, so many hurricanes and I swear Katrina was the only time I’ve ever really thought I wasn’t going to make it. The roof blew off our house. We had no electricity or food assistance for about 6 weeks. It’s a very rural area, so conditions were much different than in the city. We had a hand crank radio and all I can remember is listening to nonstop, horrifying stories from the city. God, I can still smell the flood water when I think about it. It was so incredibly hot and revolting and unspeakably terrifying.

The role of isurance companies is also key to understand the struggle to rebuild. They did all sorts of tricks not to pay people.

remember, philip from volksgeist is emotionally stable and knows how to swim

I was 5. We went to Houston. Couldn’t believe the lack of effort from our government to help. Even today, the Cajun Navy and our neighbors have done much more than the government have done to help after Katrina. We are STILL recovering.

God bless every citizen who took it upon themselves risking their lives to save others when the ones with power sat back and watched

It’s so heartbreaking how throughout this entire thing, the people who needed help had to sit around in filth and despair while those who were in control did more harm than good

In 2007 I had a door to door sales job traveling the country.

In Bilouxi, Mississippi, I knocked on the door of an older woman (maybe 60 ish) right on the beach of the gulf. We got to talking about Katrina when she pointed to a big concrete slab sitting at the end of the street at an intersection. Naturally, I asked about it.

She told me it was a house full of college students at the time of Katrina. Hurricane fatigue was so real, they decided to board up all the windows and throw a "Hurricane party"

I'm from Indiana, so this sounded crazy to me. She told me sometime early in the morning when it was still dark, a giant wave came up the street and swept the house right off its foundation. Killed all 22 people inside.

After hearing that, it was eerie looking at that empty foundation. That was almost 20 years ago. I never hear the word Hurricane without thinking about that.

The United Cajun navy is still around, they do a lot of rescue and recovery work after tornadoes and hurricanes, and even got mules to go up to NC when the hollers got hit by hurricane Helene, since the streets were destroyed.

They got their start during Katrina and just. Kept going.

george bush doesnt care about black people

I was in a northern state about a year ago and met a homeless man on public transit. We got talking, and he said he lost his home and life savings in Katrina because it was all under the mattress. He had nothing and no one, and had wandered the country since because he’d wake up with nightmares or panic at any job he got so he was never able to rebuild. It was crazy to meet someone who still lives with that scar so vividly 20 years later 40:52

I was 10 years old, we evacuated the day before. House got 16 feet of water and we lost everything. Crazy time.

What hurts the most about Katrina was this could've pulled the country and communities together but what it did was left more impoverished individuals behind. Hearing how the local and even surrounding police treated people. How those who went to the dome were forced to just survive not knowing what was going on was so horrible. And yet we learned nothing even after more tragedies came.

I remember when this happened, I was still a young lad at the time. This storm put my life on a downward trajectory for a very, very long time. Seeing this video brought back emotions that I haven't dealt with in a very long time, but I'm very thankful to have made I through. This disaster compelled me to assist with the Cajun navy and other organizations, any time a hurricane rocked the area

who remembers the infamous news segment? of the homeless gentleman & his dog? He said they were killing ppl inside the evac center & the news reporter had to take the mic & change topics

I live just outside of New Orleans and still to this day there are abandoned and damaged buildings left behind from hurricane Katrina
