The passenger ferry is an institution of many a maritime nation, oftentimes being the only form of transport accessible for those on remote islands or who aren’t afforded the luxury of flight. Such dependence, though, doesn’t make these vessels infallible - in fact some of the worst maritime disasters in history have occurred on the decks of these otherwise utilitarian passenger ships. There’s something about the design and operation of ferries that leaves them vulnerable to mismanagement, misoperation and mishap. Today we’ll look at two of the most tragic ferry disasters from recent history and try to figure out what lessons should be taken from their loss. From the badly-managed Express Samina out of Greece, sunk in 2000 with 81 deaths - to the overloaded burning cage that became the Philippines greatest ocean tragedy: the Dona Paz of Sulpicio Lines.

Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels– from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!
