Donkey Kong Country looked like the future when it arrived on the Super Nintendo in 1994. But more than 30 years later, those graphics aren't the reason I still want to play it.

In this Rudetuna’s Arcade documentary, I go back to the original Donkey Kong Country and look at what Rare actually changed: Donkey Kong himself, the world around him, the way the game rewards momentum, its hidden secrets, its difficulty, and one of the most memorable soundtracks of the 16-bit era.

We’ll also look back at Donkey Kong’s arcade roots, Cranky Kong’s connection to the original character, Rare’s pre-rendered visual technology, David Wise and the DKC soundtrack, and why Nintendo is still wrestling with the question of what Donkey Kong should be today.

The graphics made Donkey Kong Country look like the future.

The game they helped build is why it didn’t stay in the past.
