Intro
One of our iconic episodes, re-released on the day RTL turns thirty-seven. In this episode, Ruud Hendriks himself sits on the other side of the table.
Ruud is co-founder of RTL, co-founder of Startupbootcamp, and co-founder of this podcast. On October 2, 1989, RTL VĂŠronique went on air for the first time at six o'clock in the evening, as the first commercial channel for the Netherlands, taking a detour through Luxembourg because it was not permitted from the Netherlands. Ruud was a co-founder and its first program director. He brought Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden to the Netherlands, discovered Jeroen van Inkel and Adam Curry, conceived Sky Radio, led NBC Europe from London, and served on the board of directors of Endemol when it was acquired by TelefĂłnica for billions. Currently, through Startupbootcamp, he is involved with some 1,400 startups and serves as a supervisory board member at Invest-NL. In this episode, among other things:

Why October 2nd is a special date for him

How he secured RTL's financing after a year and a half of nothing but rejections

Why he signed presenter contracts with money that wasn't there

The seizure of his house, and the lunch in Cannes with which he resolved it

How Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden almost went off the air after three weeks

The deal with Joop van den Ende that tripled market share

How RTL's ratings were artificially boosted in the early years

Three years in London, and what Jack Welch taught him about leadership

Sport7: raising a billion in 36 hours, and losing everything four months later

Booed by 50,000 people, and living with ten million in debt for five years

What it cost him personally, and who he went to apologize to afterwards

Why he left the media for startups at fifty

Tip from Ruud, for starting entrepreneurs: "Start. There are so many reasons not to start as an entrepreneur, but the most important tip is: start."

Tip from Richard: "When you are in a country or a city, leave the beaten path. If you turn right for once, it is actually much more beautiful."
