Intro
In this episode of Doorzetters, Ruud Hendriks and Richard Bross speak with Tacco Marijnen. He describes his own career as a jack of all trades and master of none, and that is precisely where his strength lies. He dropped out of law school in Tilburg, built a frying pan with Crowd Cookware that he pre-sold worldwide via Kickstarter, brought a Chinese battery concept to the Netherlands that didn't make it, and subsequently bought McGregor: an iconic Dutch clothing brand that had already been written off multiple times.
In addition, together with partner Mark Brouwers, he built up the Bratara Group. Food, non-food, and pet products; started five years ago with zero revenue, now around one hundred million in turnover at Action alone. With twenty-five employees.
In this episode, among other things:
Why he never wanted to buy McGregor, and did it anyway
How a brand with zero revenue goes to fifty million in five years
The three lawsuits against Conor McGregor, and why he won all three
Why he had no choice but to pursue those lawsuits
How you get a knife for eighty-nine euros for two fifty at Action
What his financial manager told him about Burkina Faso
The divorce and the departure of his business partners during the same period
Why he repaid investors when he didn't have to
How Action still works with Excel, and what they built around it themselves
Why he goes to the Canton Fair every year and what that yields

Tips from this episode
Tip from Tacco: visit trade fairs, even if it costs money and travel time. "A flying crow always catches something." And: networking isn't about who you are, but about who you know. And whatever you can get done today, get it done.
Tip from Richard: Matsu in Eindhoven. Wagyu in all forms and a wine list that works.
Tip from Ruud: Apple Wallet. Not just your bank cards, but also your loyalty cards, gift cards, admission tickets, and boarding passes.
