DHH is my spirit animal when it come s to 'line noise' and syntax issues. I have hung onto Ruby for all the reasons he subscribes to.

That is the exact example that got me interested in Ruby.

So simple. So logical. So elegant.

Ruby has beautiful syntax,
Elixir has beautiful syntax wrapped around a genius core.

I don't know why I laughed when he said "question mark"

Well, yeah but Ruby will take your love to town, don't ask me how I know.

Using Ruby on Rails for almost 20 years now. Still loving it, easy to debug when there's a problem. 🥰

We are actually designing our in-house software with Ruby.

For me it's Elixir

I always found the metaprogramming features of Ruby to be unmatched.

What a wonderful declaration of love for the most beautiful programming language in the world! 💌

If you combine math and linguistics you get fun results. Ei)image prompt code: apple > apple should translate directly into the first apple being bigger the the first so Wordmath strip conjunctions and replace with operators.

K/Q… 5’$”hello”

‘ is each

Could replace $”” with a backtick to symbolicate instead of a string (if you’re okay with interning)

@water_melon_9000 1 year ago

I don’t know man, we have plenty of Ruby at our company and everyone just absolutely hates it because it’s hard to work with it in a bigger code base, it’s incredibly slow, and installing older gems is a torture. So we are actively rewriting it to more “modern” stacks and so far there’s no regrets.

The 5.times example is straight Smalltalk, that's what inspired Ruby's deep object-orientation. That's also why all the OOP people moved to Ruby after Smalltalk kind of fizzled out. DHH claims he discovered Ruby reading Russ Olsen's Design Patterns in Ruby, and Olsen often mentions Smalltalk's inspiration on Ruby in that book. Kind of surprised that DHH would say he's unaware of any other language that reads like Ruby for that example.

```smalltalk
5 timesRepeat: [ Transcript show: 'Hello.'; cr ].
```
