A lot of people don’t realize that a Bluray is often a much higher video quality than nearly anything on streaming, then a 4k bluray is 4x above that.

My 3 year old really enjoys picking a DVD out. We just buy them for £1 a pop at charity shops.

I basically built our own video store in our backyard. We have about 3000 or so titles across various formats. While we do have streaming, I like to keep my kids bedrooms, algorithm free. So they get to go out to the video store and load up on “rentals” that they’ve looked through and chosen, and that’s what they’re allowed to have in their bedrooms. So 2026 my kids are largely being raised on VHS and DVD.

Pulling the drawer with the VHSs is the trademark of this channel and has something soothing.

Simple. Taking back ownership of what we buy. Also, if you think about it, buying physical media and cancelling your paid streaming subscriptions also means getting back your privacy. Your data isn’t being collected. I’ve gotten to the point that I’m in the market for a non-smart TV and just plug my laptop to it. That way I have more control of what I can view on the tv via Internet instead of what I am forced to.

I introduced my kids to "Special Features" and now they love watching them after we watch a movie. They love the magic that goes into film and television making!

I remember going to a 24 hour Wal Mart with my former roommate so she could buy the Return of the King special edition box set right when it came out at midnight. There were actually a few people with the same idea, it was a lot of fun. And not an experience you can get with streaming.

Almost all the video games I have are physical discs. I'm so tired of companies removing entire libraries of games and other media for ridiculous reasons.

Music CDs, with their often elaborately designed covers, cases, and booklets featuring the lyrics alongside pictures of the band,
are much better than some anonymous streaming platform where you don’t actually own anything. I have over 300 VHS tapes full of old TV shows, theater performances,
operas, music videos from MTV, VH1, etc.,  and series that premiered uncut over 25 years ago on Sky TV and other pay-TV channels.
I still buy the uncut and director’s cut versions of series and movies on DVD and Blu-ray today.

I find it cheaper in the long run just to buy an occasional disc or tv series than pay for streaming.  If you quit streaming after paying $1000 over a number of years or months, you lose access to everything, but if you paid $1000 for physical media, you keep it. You can also put your movies on your laptops, smartphones, tablets and watch with no internet on a plane or bus. And I would rather watch DVD quality video with no commercials than HD streaming video with commercials.

My family has a couple streaming services, but started borrowing my PS4 to pla y Blu-rays earlier this year. Later, we accumulated 3 standalone blu-ray players for my little sister's room, the office, and the basement tv.

We never got rid of our movies and CDs, they just sat in a big container in the garage. Some of em are Redbox movies we forgot to return (I remember we'd occasionally do that ritual outside Walgreens for a family movie night)

I was a bit surprised because I didn't even have to convince mom to do it, she was already on the bandwagon that streaming services are out of hand. Well....they're still subbed to those services, but at least their foot's halfway out the door I guess.

Recently installed a blu ray drive into my PC as well, and I find a particular joy of using iTunes to rip CDs to my iPod.

Also, it may not be as flashy as Blockbuster, but remember that libraries usually also let you rent movies for free if you're unsure about buying one!

The funny thing about streaming service bundles, I remember once the second streaming service hit the market after Netflix (I wanna say it was Hulu) I immediately said that if more services are created then eventually they will be treated like tv channels and people with start selling bundles just like cable. And look where we are now!

I've built a pretty decent collection of DVDs and CDs for cheap in a short period of time. I generally don't watch a lot of new shows and movies so I'm fine with the old stuff.

Also for fragmented: some tv may have missing episodes for many reasons, including full seasons on different streamers

After having my debit card, that I used for my streaming services almost exclusively to pay, have info stolen and get a fraud charge and have the card closed, it was immensely refreshing not having to pay for so many streaming services. Such an event finally forced me to really evaluate what services I wanted to pay for and now I'm doing a rotation of those services every month, as well as using more of my DVD collection I've built up over the past few years.

It feels very liberating to able to choose from my collection and just use the services I want for the stuff I want to watch on there (really, one's for sporting events).

I don't I can ever go back towards paying for so many services in a single month again.

Also, at least here in the US, your library card means you can rent movies (for free) from the library, and also stream using the Kanopy app (for free). Fuck expensive streaming services.
