I was talking to a beginner’s mum today and saying how playing a brass instrument is comparable to singing where the instrument is just an amplifier. Being a singer herself, she quickly understood how sometimes the notes work and other times they don’t. Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s not.
One thing that massively changes a trumpet’s response is how clan it is. I clean my lead-pipe and tuning slide once a week before my main big band rehearsal as it brings the zing back. The rest of the horn is cleaned at least once a month. Valves whenever I have an issue with them.
Then about 4 years later my chops got stronger and I took out the gold rim and loved it. Today it's my everyday piece.
Absolutely DON"T...get the mouthpiece that makes you sound 'best' (you'll choose a sound that is far too dark in tone) at the outset in the mid and lower register (usually a large one) UNLESS...you want to limit yourself to playing 3rd of 4th stand for the rest of your life, and UNLESS...you are naturally gifted OR...you intend to practice properly 5 hours/day like a legit player to manage that mouthpieces...requirements of endurance. You'll never develop a lead upper register by trying to hang on to a massive, rich, low and mid register. That's why 'all'...and I mean ALL lead players sound like crap down low with their 'usual' equipment, UNLESS...they move to a bigger mouthpiece as situation requires it. The reward, the...gift of mastering a shallow mouthpiece is that going shallow to deep is that its easy and its immediate! But going from deep to shallow...doesn't work at all. That's why trumpet player can double on trombone, BUT...it doesn't work the other way around.
