Rick Baptist played lead trumpet on the Oscars for 30 years, on hundreds of film
scores for John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, and on the Tonight Show band. He did
all of it with half a left lung, after a collapsed lung at ten years old put the
horn in his hands in the first place.

In this interview he says the things almost nobody at his level will say out loud.
He was never a big practicer. The money was never in the high notes, and he only
ever saw a written double high C once in 66 years. And ten years after putting the
horn down, he still dreams about playing and still won't pick it up.

If you've been told to use more air, tighten your corners, and practice harder for
thirty years and it still hasn't worked, that's not a talent problem. That's a
method problem dressed up as a talent problem.
