Thank you for posting this. There are more than 7600 Canadians buried in the Nethlands
and their graves are carefully maintained by the Dutch.

Canadians volunteered to fight for freedom In a country with a population of 10 million at the time over 1 million volunteered. That says a lot.

As a Dutch person I can tell you we have been raised to remember and consider the Canadian men who died for our country. Last year I visited Arnhem.. and after all these years it is still shocking to see the gravestones most with names, some without. And the ages of these men. I was 36 and there was only one name, one man, older than I was at that moment. Most men died being between 17 to 30 years old. I was with my younger brother, and the loss I felt imagining him being one of those men. I'm a blabbermouth usually. But at that moment, silence was the only thing next to the birds you could hear. I don't think Canadians understand what their sacrifce meant for us. Canada is our hero.

My father almost starved to death, but was saved by the Canadians' actions in making sure food was distributed as quickly as possible.
A large number of villagers from the area emigrated to the New World within 3 years of the end of the war. My family was so grateful to Canada, they became Canadians. I am extremely grateful to live here. 🍁

My dad’s dad was a butcher in The Netherlands who was in one of the Nazi labour camps. He was liberated by Canadian forces and after the war was over, he immigrated to Canada because he said they had saved his life and he felt like Canada was suppose to be his home. Him and his wife settled in Sarnia, Ontario and ended up having 10 children. Without Canada’s part in defeating Nazi forces in The Netherlands, I may never have been born. My love for my country cannot be overstated. I was born and raised Canadian and this is my home. We Stand On Guard for Thee!

We also saved their royal family, to this day the Dutch still gift Canada thousands of tulips as token of their gratitude.

Canadian here 🇨🇦 never ever mistake our kindness for weakness! Our forces are some of the fiercest on the battle field. Loved your reaction, thank you!

🌹We Canadians have a warm spot in our hearts for the Dutch people. Their generosity and never ending appreciation brings a tear to those of us who remember. We owe them for all the love they have given back.

Canadian cemeteries in Holland are maintained with love and kept in amazing shape. When you see the number of Canadian bodies here it makes you realize the depth of the sacrifice.

There's a movie on Netflix, a Dutch movie, titled "the Forgotten Battle" , about the battle of the Scheldt.
Canadians will have heard of it, as have we here in the Netherlands 🇳🇱, but not many others have. It's not called the forgotten battle for nothing.
It was very important (the port of Antwerp was needed for the Allies, and you need the Scheldt for that), pretty bloody, and the Canadians did most of the heavy lifting. After that battle, the Canadians liberated the rest of the country. Which had been starving through that winter, the Germans had taken all the food. So the Canadians were very, very welcome.
We haven't forgotten, Canada, and we probably never will.

My Mom was a Holocaust survivor. She was 8 when they took her parents (killed ) and then took the three kids, with my mom being given up by the people who were paid to hide her, and it was the Canadians who liberated them in the end. As a result when my mom married, they decided to go to Canada and I was born in Canada. Proud to be Canadian , even prouder of where my country stands on Peacekeeping. But never make the mistake that when push comes to shove, Canada will always be there. Strong and Proud.

As well, the Dutch Royal family was protected in Canada during the war and Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa. The Gov of Canada temporarily declared the delivery room as extraterritorial so the baby was not technically born in Canada and could hold pure Dutch citizenship. To this day, the Dutch Royal family sends tens of thousands of tulip bulbs to Ottawa to say thank you to Canada. Ottawa now has one of the largest tulip festivals in the world each Spring. It's a very special relationship.
