Can we all just take a second to appreciate how insane the Switch era has been (still is)? So many fantastic games, everyone has found at least one of their all time favorites.

What I’d love to see next is a complete overhaul of the Super Mario All-stars collection using this engine 😍 I know I know, I might be in the minority as many others would love to see something NEW, but man.. I’d be the happiest person to see Super Mario Bros. 2 & 3 in this style.

Same here, odyssey has some strong moments, but Wonder is just more fun to play through, and especially to 100% comlete!

I enjoyed Super Mario Odyssey for the creative level design, the music (the forest, desert, New Donk City, and Bowser's Castle are my favorite tracks), and Cappy's capture mechanics. It was a great game! But you are right, after you beat Bowser, I kind of lost motivation to find more Moons. It is cool to revisit from time to time to just explore especially if you have had a long break from the game.
Now I am still playing through Super Mario Bros Wonder and I have to say as someone who isn't as crazy about 2D Mario games compared to the 3D ones and the Mario RPGs (pre-Sticker Star of course), this was a surprise hit game for me and am enjoying it way more than I anticipated I would. I just love the Wonder Seed twist to level design, the animations, the badge system, and even the music (love the new Underground theme)! Also, as someone with a busy work life that only squeezes in about 1-1 1/2 hours of gaming on the weekdays, Super Mario Bros Wonder has been a huge stressbuster for me due to how fun and colorful it is! Both are great games in their own right! :)

Odyssey felt disjointed to me, it's about marriage, it's about hats, it's about traveling, it's about cooking, it's about a cabaret show with realistic people for no reason, if it had a central theme connecting the dots it would be a better game imo

Nice to see that people are being respectful in the comments. I really like this conversation. I can’t weigh in on which game I prefer because I haven’t beaten Wonder yet and I also feel like I’d want to go back and replay Odyssey before weighing in because I do think recency bias can be a thing. I think it’s great that this is a legit conversation though because I think it speaks to how quality Wonder is in comparison to the NSMB series - which I would not even consider anywhere near the same level
of quality or fun as any 3D Mario.

Bowser jr  needs his own game now so adorable

Its still early, will see if I feel the same. I wanted this more than an Odyssey sequel at the moment because we've been away from original 2d longer than we have 3d mario. Longer if you don't count any of the NSMBU games after DS or the makers as original projects.

Love both games but ima have to give it to odyssey easily

At least Peach gets her revenge in SMB Wonder.

Honestly I agree, What I love about Wonder is that despite its flexibility of obtaining the collectibles, you still have to do certain levels. What I disliked most about Odyssey, is just how easy it is to get a Power Moon, so much so that you don't even have to bother with completing most of the main objectives. With Wonder, it doesn't matter how many Wonder seeds you obtained, their only good in certain areas and unlock certain paths you have to follow. I think the shortness of the levels helps the gameplay flow as in the New series, they can be really boring with how long they are.

I don't understand the complaint against Mario Odyssey having a low ceiling for completion just because you can find enough moons to progress before exploring all there is to do in a level.

It's always been that way for 3D Mario games. Every world has multiple Stars to find within the same sandbox, and you don't even have to get them all to beat the game, and the Galaxy games, in particular, have a rather uninteresting post game as well.

The whole point of Odyssey was to evolve that collectathon formula into a much more seamless and open adventure and with the sandbox levels being so big, they have to be filled with moons so that you're constantly rewarded for engaging with every corner of the level which is filled with all sorts of fun stuff to do that would have originally booted you out of the level after completing just to hop back in and and go somewhere you've already been or do something you couldn't do before in the same level.

The level design and sheer variety of activities, transformations, challenges, and how they're so brilliantly tied together into a cohesive sandbox, which there are many of, is just absolutely incredible. Especially when paired with the smoothest and tightest controls of any 3D Mario game.

I've always preferred 2D Mario.

It's interesting how we're basically the opposites with our opinions when it comes to the endgames of these games. I liked how you didn't have to get every single moon to access the final level of odyssey, though that may have been because of the seer amount of them. That doesn't change the fact that I don't like it when a game forces you to 100% levels to access the final level, so I don't think I will ever play the Final Final test in wonder but I played and loved Darker side (however frustrating it was but that made the completion so elating.) in Odyssey.

Odyssey is a certified 10. Wonder gets a 9.9 because of that damn invisible badge final-final challenge. Took me so many hours it decreased the score. There are 435 names in the credits and one was responsible for that atrocity. Not even the jump rope was capable of doing that to odyssey.

I haven’t completed Mario Wonder yet but I can already say it’s the best 2D Mario in decades. I still prefer Mario Odyssey a little more at the moment (I like 3D Mario games more in general) but maybe that will change once I’ve completed Wonder!

I actually agree with you about the Mario Odyssey criticisms. It was an amazing game but there were just too many moons that ended up slightly diluting the experience of getting one.

Wonder definitely managed to surprise me.

I completed Odyssey. In a world where I have to choose, I prefer it over Wonder. Thankfully I don't live in that world.

Mario Odyssey for me wins because it allows for many more possibilities, in terms of movesets, shortcuts and (path)ways of exploring, collecting moons. The gameplay in Mario Wonder, although quite varied thanks to the badges, is more straightforward. Often in Mario Odyssey, I wonder whether I can take a shortcut or go straight up to the top using Cappy. Whenever I succeed, it's just marvelous. This is a satisfying feeling I don't get in Mario Bros Wonder. I understand that Odyssey may feel a bit overwhelming having too many moons to collect, but just like Koroks in BOTW and TOTK, I don't believe we are meant to collect all of them. On the other hand though, it could be that having many more moons to collect feels that every one time you collect a moon feels less "amazing" than if there were fewer moons. An improvement could be that you must go through more steps to get the moon (or star or shrine) so that each time you collect a moon, it feels more rewarding. Because indeed most moons in Odyssey are kind of "freebies".

I appreciate a few people like Wonder better though. It just shows that 2D nintendo platform games are still very enjoyable.

I agree about adding Wario and Waluigi as a characters in Mario mainline game. Even better if they had unique movesets.

I think personally enjoyed both equally for different reasons. Both are so good. I really enjoyed my recent time with Mario Wonder as it just brings back the more simple time of gaming. ✌️
