When is the best age to retire in Thailand—40, 50, 60, or even 70? 🇹🇭 In this vlog, I take a walk around the Hang Dong area near Chiang Mai and share my honest thoughts on retirement, getting older, and why moving to Thailand earlier in life can change your entire perspective.

I talk about my own journey from arriving in Thailand in my early 40s to adapting to middle age, the realities of growing older abroad, healthcare, relationships, finances, and who might look after you later in life. We also chat about the everyday realities of living in Thailand—from water shortages and brown water to geckos, cockroaches, and simply learning to accept the unexpected.

Is it better to work until traditional retirement age, or enjoy more of your life while you're still young and healthy? There are arguments on both sides.

I retired to Hatyai at 53 with a chunk of money. Met a local, got married, learnt to speak a bit of Thai & understand the culture well enough. Three years later I found myself realising that being in Thai 100 percent of the time is not for me. Navigating the cultural differences can wear you out a bit. Fortunately it was easy to find a job back in Australia that comes with a house, car and 4 months straight holidays each year. It's also been fun introducing my wife to Australia and it has helped her understand why I do the things I do.
Thailand will always be a base but being 100 percent retired there can wait a bit.

All I know is 65 is too late to retire, and that's common retirement age in the U.S. because that is when Medicare starts, and you don't want to be without insurance in this country. Now that I'm 60 and been retired 3 years I'm ready to move next year to Thailand. I feel bad for people who have to work to 65, seen too many pass away right after retiring.

I love your channel, Wayne. You are the only one who talks in a relatable way for me. Example: Where else are people talking about the cockroaches and geckos here in Chiang Mai? It is so familiar to me that you kill the roaches, but cannot even bother with the geckos because they are so quick. This is what I am living as well and I often wonder whether this is a common experience for others and you confirm it. It's comforting to see others having the same experiences as I am in Chiang Mai. These relatable moments seem to happen a few time every vlog (...not a Phil Collins fan as well 😆). Thanks for all you do. Keep up the good work, Wayne!

Apart from making certain that you have enough funds to retire on there's so much more to consider. Don't rush in to buying a property or condo no matter what the deal is. Settle in to a rental property first and make absolutely 💯 % sure that Thailand is right for you. Don't expect Utopia because there's no such thing. Don't expect standard and rules to be the same as your home country. Be aware that Thailand traffic is not for everyone. 2 German seniors were just killed making a crossing on a green light down south. And lastly, Try before you Buy. Spend time in different parts of Thailand before making a decision. I know Thailand is right for me but far from perfect. Oh' I'm writing as you're speaking. Wayne, 70 comes faster than you think. Came here last year, just turned 62...financially for me it was the point where it was possible, but I wish I'd done it 10 years before. Don't wait till you realise your time is running out, as soon as its viable, jump.

My Thai wife and I purchased a brand new home in Chiang Mai 2010, l retired at 52 from America, and we moved here in 2017. Can't believe how fast almost 10 years has gone by living here now 😮!

For me I was 64 years old and after a full career with Aramco. (I’m 74 now - 10 wonderful years here. Every single day has been amazing.)

Retirement starts when ones working life ends at which time their wealth determines how secure they would be in a foreign country long term. I'd live it up from 60 to 67 travelling generally based in Thailand which is pretty much what you are doing, but a few years younger, and then reassess health and the need for a partner. I'm guessing most people have income earning investments investment properties, bonds and shares etc etc to comfortably finance retirement. I'd have a reputable health fund in place, insane not to. At any stage after 67 I'd be looking out for the right partner importantly around my own age to go that extra distance with me to the end of life. I'd ensure that partner had met the key family members which ever home country they resided and provided with full contact details in case the end came there in Thailand, for estate reasons oh and a will needs to be in place of course. . That's pretty much my view. I'm going on 70 and here in Oz with the family so I'm not in such a position but still watched to video and threw my 2 bobs worth in. You must be approaching that 55 age you were talking about I'm guessing. Cheers Wayne 🤩

I reckon retirement depends on everyone's personal situation. If you can retire at a early age why not. But if you ain't financially set up then maybe you have to keep going for a few yrs more.
It's really a personal choice.

Hi Wane, well I come every year in the winter to Chiangmai now I am retirement and have the possibility to stay in Chiangmai for a long time But I don't no if that the right choice .When I go there er is not a way back and one one day you gonna older like over 70 year and the health insurgency is a problem in Thailand I believe. For me is the combination Europe and Chiangmai the right choise .But you never now....

Everybody is different. The only one who can tell you when to retire is yourself. But let me tell you Wayne. Retirement is so underrated. It’s the greatest feeling ever. Everyday is Saturday when you retire.😂

I retired at 49 just like you here in the states and I spend the rest of my time managing my portfolio and traveling a lot all over the world and I love it I am not do anything different than what I'm doing right now those who want to work I can keep working good luck to them

in my late 50's i started coming to SEA in our UK winters. Even with the flights its cheaper for a few months than at home. Then head back home for spring and summer. Toying with renting an apartment in Bangkok and staying longer, but I think I prefer combining the countries also with some trips to Portugal too.

There is no right age, its different for everyone, im Mr safety net, incase my original plan fails i need to know ive got something to catch me, ive never really had that well paying jobs, ive done alright but not got loads therefore i need to know if it all goes pair then im still ok. That said i think if you go when youre younger you will know more about the place and feel more at home because youve been there longer and know more about it. I could do it now but i think its too early, im too far away from my pension age, what if this, what if that etc etc.. a few more years and im done i reckon, ive just gotta get there in one piece first! 😂

Ive been retired for a few years, and started coming here almost 3 years ago. I'll live here full time in 5 years at the normal retirement age.

Wayne... There are videos of the excellent retirement homes in Thailand. Not like the prisons in the U.S. I think even guys in their 50s use them. They are more like resorts, but with medical help. Prices about $1,500/month on up to luxury class. A new one is being built in Hua Hin. More Americans need to know about their options.
