I played Doom and Doom Eternal, and I just wanted to ramble about how much I love these games. They truly embraced the idea of being just, epic freaking video games. They're fast, violent and pull no punches. They're the most honest video games I've ever played and Doom Eternal is one of my favourites of all time.
In this video, I spend 20 minutes talking about how embracing the rule of fun, and focusing squarely on achieving that sense of mechanical awesomeness has crafted some of the greatest video games I've ever played, and how they're optimised to complete perfection to run buttery smooth on all kinds of hardware. Doom and Eternal run like a dream these days thanks to being slightly older but also well optimised. If you have a modest setup, you owe it to yourself to try these games.
I think Doom is at its best in teaching you how to play the mechanics, giving you a great toolset, and then allowing you to go all out using those mechanics to achieve mastery and express yourself. The Doom Dance really came together into perfection in Eternal and nothing has quite scratched that itch for me ever since. I personally love Super Shotgun to Ballista Combo, Precision Bolt is one of my favourites too, I'm getting the hang of quick-scoping it, it's REALLY cool to pull off a quickscope and weapon switch!
Hot tip: if you get a rune in Doom 2016, you can get unlimited ammo if your health and armour are high, and use another rune to make demons drop lots of it, which means that you basically get infinite unlimited ammo, combine that with the chain-gun turret mode mastery which means it never overheats, you get INSANE DPS from it. Worth a try!
A belated upload due to life circumstances, but I am still continuing with my 2026 Experiment of playing older titles on my Steam Library. I'm hoping to have played through a whole bunch by the year end, so please like, subscribe and follow for more!
I also do Twitch and TikTok, the best way to keep up is join the Discord:

I'm really proud of this video for some of the techniques I used, I'm learning so much since starting this hobby. I even experimented with J/L cuts here!
