Ancient India was home to some of the first universities in the world. Takshashila, which is located in modern-day Pakistan's Taxila, is considered the world's first university. It attracted students from all over the ancient world, who went there to study Vedic mathematics, science and scripture. It was also where Chanakya taught Chandragupta Maurya, the first emperor of the Maurya dynasty. Almost a thousand years after the founding of Takshashila came Nalanda, in present-day Bihar. Nalanda was founded in 427 CE by the Gupta dynasty. After Nalanda came Vikramashila, Odantapuri, Somapura and Jagaddala, to form ancient India's version of the Ivy League, the Mahaviharas.  Hem Saroya tells you more.
