What’s the CRAZIEST moment in German history? 🇩🇪

Germans surely know how to rebuild from ashes

Two important omissions: the Holy Roman Empire was not called that from the beginning. It was initially the “Roman Empire,” later “Holy Empire,” then “Holy Roman Empire,” and from 1512 “Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.”

Also, Prussia’s origins are not explained. It grew out of the state of the Teutonic Knights, a medieval crusading military order comparable to the Templars, who conquered and developed the Prussian territories and founded cities such as Königsberg.

And Jan Hus was already calling for major Church reforms more than 100 years before Luther.

why did you skip over the entire Crusades period where Germany helped hold back the invasion coming from the middle east through the ottoman empire?

2,000 years in 32 minutes is wild 😂 Definitely a history marathon, but somehow still feels too short for Germany’s story.

Watching the maps shift over 2,000 years really shows how recent a 'unified Germany' actually is. 1871 is practically yesterday compared to everything before it. Awesome work!

World War I has been somewhat overlooked. Hardly anyone outside of Germany knows that the Germans were forced to attack for their own survival.

The assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne led to Austria's war with Serbia. A perfectly ordinary little war, as was quite common in those dark times. Around the same time, France invaded Morocco, Russia had just lost its invasion of Korea, Great Britain, which had already invaded half the world, brutally suppressed uprisings in India, and the USA bought the Philippines from Spain and murdered 200,000 civilians there.

But yes, Russia, strangely enough, saw the war in Serbia as a pretext to mobilize its entire army—3 million soldiers, the largest army in the world—and send it westward toward Germany and Austria. You don't mobilize 3 million soldiers to let them stand around doing nothing. It was a clear declaration of war. Germany asked for the mobilization to be called off, otherwise it would be considered a declaration of war—the Russians refused.

Why did it become a world war and not simply a Russo-German war?

Because of the alliances of the nations surrounding Germany. War with Russia would automatically mean war with France—a two-front war that was impossible to win. Germany's only chance of survival was to use the two weeks Russia needed to mobilize and defeat France during that time. However, the direct border with France was too well fortified to cross so quickly, so the only option was a detour via Belgium. Belgium, in turn, had an alliance with Great Britain, which also led Great Britain to declare war on Germany.

And so, the First World War began. Not because Germany was recklessly attacking in all directions, but because it had to find a way to survive Russian aggression. But history is written by the victors.

2,000 years of German history packed into 18 minutes… absolutely insane. The wars, shifting borders, empires, religious conflicts, and political changes make it feel like you’re watching an entire historical saga unfold. Huge respect to the artists for turning such a massive and complicated history into something this entertaining and easy to follow. What a journey.

My complete history lessons from 8 years of secondary school in 32 min, impressive. We are strange people, though, not proud of what we have accomplished at all. Such a peaceful Europe after thousands of years of war, discrimination, defeat and rebuild. And still people are not happy.

Correction - the Romans WERE intimidated by the Germanic tribes!!
When Caesar was facing an incursion by Ariovistus, a generation earlier, his HIGHLY experienced Legions were afraid of facing the oncoming Germanic hordes, as the average German stood a full head taller than most of the men of the Legions. Caesar told his men - "It's ok! You don't need to face them if you don't want to. You can leave and take your chances (as deserters). If I have to, I'll face Ariovistus with just the 10th Legion at my back, as I'm certain they would never abandon me!" This was the first time- but not the last time- that Caesar publically favoured the tenth legion (Legio X Equestris). In fact, it was when he went to speak with Ariovistus that the 10th won their Cognomen!!

Caesar was wary of a trap, thinking that his Gallic cavalry might betray him to Ariovistus. So he got all the Gauls to dismount and mounted the entire 10th legion. At this time one of the men of the 10th said "Caesar over-delivered on his promise! He promised to make us all his personal guard (Praetorians), but he went and made us into Knights (Equestrians)!!"  While this doesn't translate well, at the time it was considered quite the amusing joke.
But I digress...

The point here is - The Romans were usually smaller in build and in height than the average German. Even the most experienced men of the most experienced Legions still found these Germans to be intimidating. It's incorrect to say that Rome didn't see Germany as a problem.

the second world war started because the first ended in humiliation

Besides the amazing style I love your videos because they show the whole development of a country or topic where usually documentations only focus on specific topics without the impact of it for the future

Incredible story telling .. thanks

32 minutes and I actually didn't get bored once 😂
