That is the single most effective scare I've ever seen too.  And I've seen A LOT of horror movies.

Imagine waking up one morning and seeing your dead lifeless corpse standing in the corner. This movie truly gave me shivers.

More and more folks are realizing what an innovative gem Lake Mungo is.
Whenever I think of the movie, loneliness and existential dread washes over me. It’s not just ‘the scene’ that gets me, it’s the implication of that scene and grief I take on mysteriously. I am deeply saddened by a fictional character and bothered, I’m guessing, on a subconscious level that I have never felt during any other film. Damn you Mungo!!

the ghost of Lake Mungo is nothing more then a message. showing Alice that Death is coming and she can't stop it.
I think Alice didn't say anything. or show any signs of being different or scared was because she accepted it.
Alice was scared of dying for so long that once she came face to face with her own fate. she accepted it and went on with what little life she had left. enjoying time with her family. being a normal girl knowing soon very soon. her fate would finally catch up with her.

Lake Mungo is a movie about the acceptance of death.

I watched this movie on a whim yesterday and it made me not wanna go to bed.

Very good video. We all wrestle with the fact that we die. Freaked me out a lot as a kid.

I’ve watched a lot of horror movies in my life, yet this movie affected me in a way I cannot even describe. The concept of this movie is so mind/numbingly horrifying on an existential level, and that is further pushed by the film’s emotional connection to the characters and the grief they are experiencing. Absolutely brilliant.

I totally get you.  This movie made me sleep with the lights on.  I've only been able to bring myself to rewatch it twice because it fucks with my head and my heart.  So I don't think I could call it my favourite horror movie.  But even now it can give me goosebumps and delay going to bed a few hours to watch something animated.  It affects me like no other horror movie has

Happy to see i'm not the only thinking that scene is one of the scariest i've seen, and i watched 1200+ horror movies in my life

It's a doppelganger. This isn't something new, it's a classic omen when seen foretells your death

Brilliant essay man. Also just thought it was really cool how you said the last sentence and then put “the end” after it. Neat double entendre.

I only watched Lake Mungo for the first time this year and I STUPIDLY watched it late at night, on my own with the lights turned off. Cliche' AF but that's how I watched it. This film is absolutely in my top 10 of films for what it does, sets out to do and delivers. It's criminally underrated and perhaps one of the deepest and most profound films in the horror genre. A friend of mine said it doesn't even belong in the horror genre because it's not a film that's about scaring you... but it does.

Ugh. This video is so fucking good. I gotta watch this movie now.

Just finished this movie for the first time. Was told there’s a huge scare but still was surprised and chilled to the bone. Was scared just watching this review! But my goodness this is gonna be a new favorite for me and you talked about it beautifully. Can’t wait to recommend this movie to a friend.

Love the pacing bro! It’s calming & meditative! I’m guna have to look up this flick!!!

Beautiful essay. Just watched the film again for a third time and it still gets me.

This essay's thesis was kind of hard to wrap my head around. A second viewing helped.

So in love with this channel.

Excellent analysis! I watched this three times in a week, it’s so haunting.

The real scary part is how the cover art says "8 films to die for" yet the 8 films are never discussed in Lake Mungo.

I'm so happy it blew up so I was able to see it!
