Steve's flying high where the penguins are now.

Thank you for the countless hours you've poured into FOSS for the past 24 years.

RIP

rip steve. thank you for your contributions

The little burn I feel from the Linus's line about the patience of who trained the LLMs, is that this is 'Ananke' by Stanislaw Lem in real life (and this is a story from the 1960s...)
It kinda neatly fits into what we're seeing the AI doing (mind you these be just the headlines, I'm not deep in AI of any kind)... escaping, lying, hallucinating, conspiring, and now, giving up on hard work? so. human....

(the story basically follows an investigation of a spacecraft crash that has the root cause in an AI autopilot being trained by a human with OCPD / ananke syndrome - which leads to it requesting ever more and more data from the ship's sensors when the situation is uncertain, here in the landing configuration... ultimately exhausting the bandwidth limits of the sensor data bus which then leads to no data any more and a crash follows.)

The main problem is that Linus assumes people use AI the way he does and not as some magic box where you make a request and the magical AI creature poops out unmaintainable slop code that just clogs up open source projects.

rip steve what a legend

This is very nerdy. I love it.

Thank Steve. RIP.

KDE and BTRFS. Both are just amazing. Keep it up. I think they both show how it's done right.

RIP Steve French
I'm using samba/cifs on 5 machines. It's important to remember that we are people, not some nameless, faceless entities. Appreciate your life, while you have it, and appreciate the lives of others, especially those who spend this limited time sucking air to do work for others and contribute to the world we share

Thank you very much Nick. These news shows you provide is among the best news available. I appreciate your short and concise way of reporting.

Ty for the vid.

the KDE snapshot solution seems to somewhat highlight some potential TOCTOU and potential info leaks which would help an adversary with recon and potentially manipulate what backups would be kept and/or just help finding sensitive data locations

Nice on the spectral blending. That’s cool

What’s weird is when I read the problem statement I immediately thought it should be rounding down and not up.  So I was a little confused why it took that much debugging

The btrfs snapshots would be a game changer but also yet another reason i cant use another file manager

I write desktop Linux software. It would be a waste of my time to target Wayland because many desktop environments and window managers are still in use which are X11 only, Also Wayland has a compatibility layer for X11 programs. But if I were to target Wayland natively, my program would not work on X11 machines. It's too big of an ask for me to write support for both of them. And doing so would be a massive pain because to do it such that both aren't required for my program to work would mean manually finding every function I need at runtime instead of letting the dynamic linker do it for you.

I also have some very low power machines and on those machines, Window composition makes the system feel slower by a fair amount. On wayland, You cannot not have Window composition. I'm not willing to "upgrade" to Wayland only for my computer to perform worse and vram be wasted.

The only massive win Linux is gaining right now is that Governments and large entities are leaving Microsoft Windows and using Linux instead. This will hugely boost Linux development.

WOW!!😯  Dolphin is my favorite file manager🥳  ;Especially in dual pane mode with tabs, and a few really good Services and plugin/cross compatible KDE apps like Krename, and Kfind instead of it's own search wich is already quite good!🤓  Now it can even do BTRFS snapshots😮!

Oh wait, 🤔I don't do BTRFS!😕

😁

i have had the same kind of symptoms  on my 9700xt , hopefully this fixes the issue for AMD also , since both drivers are part of Mesa :)
