“I had a lot of fun with drugs… until the drugs had fun with me.”
That’s how Guillermo García Sánchez sums up the years when cocaine and polydrug use filled every corner of his life. He tried to get clean on his own, paid for a weekend “express treatment,” checked himself into rehab thinking about the release date so he could start using again, compared himself to others, and told himself it was all a matter of willpower.
Until something clicked.
The turning point came when a psychologist gave him a very clear picture: the Guillermo of before and the Guillermo broken by addiction. That day he could say, “That’s not me,” and begin to put a name to the disease.
Today, after years of fighting his own recovery, Guillermo is not only clean: he helps others. He is a therapist, a certified addiction behavior specialist (Minnesota model), and the therapeutic director of the Recovery Therapeutic Community in Valencia. Every day he sees people who arrive saying they “don’t have a problem,” that “willpower is enough,” or that “they only do drugs on weekends”… because he’s been there too, and he knows what’s behind those statements.
In this episode of Let’s Talk About Addiction, we discuss what happens when the body seeks both stimulation and relief. Cocaine, alcohol, polydrug use, and that dangerous illusion of “stopping for a while and then getting back on track.”
00:00 – Addiction doesn’t begin in chaos; it begins normalized.
02:55 – How substance use goes from leisure to necessity without you even realizing it.
03:55 – The lack of awareness of the illness in the early stages of addiction.
04:50 – Why looking for shortcuts in addiction often leads to relapse.
05:47 – Constant comparison and the beginning of the loss of control.
06:27 – Addiction, trauma, and dysfunctional emotional management. 07:24 – When treatment is just a temporary break before relapsing.
08:15 – Why addicts cling to what they know, even when it destroys them.
10:15 – Genetics, childhood, personality, and risk factors.
12:07 – The myth of control and the false sense of being different.
14:22 – Here, addiction is clearly defined.
16:45 – A shift in perspective: the root of addiction.
19:04 – Why many recovery processes fail without genuine surrender.
23:22 – Surrender as the starting point for profound change.
28:20 – The key moment of awareness and the beginning of true recovery.
31:18 – Alcohol, polydrug use, and why relapse doesn't always stem from the "primary drug." 35:57 – How substance use affects the brain, empathy, and decision-making ability.
40:01 – The importance of centers, therapists, and people who have been through the same thing.
43:27 – How substance use becomes normalized and boundaries are crossed without people realizing it.
57:18 – Episode closing: treatment, professional help, and a message of hope.
No filters. No stigma. Just the truth.

👤 ABOUT GUILLERMO GARCÍA:
Guillermo is 36 years old and for years he mixed cocaine, alcohol, and other substances with a life that from the outside seemed "normal": work, relationships, parties, weekends. Inside, his emotional state was chaotic.
He tried to quit in his own way. He paid for a weekend detox treatment that only lasted one night. He checked himself in several more times, sometimes to appease his family, other times thinking about his release date so he could relapse. He was convinced his problem was a lack of willpower.
After a recovery process that included treatment, mutual support groups, and a profound life change, Guillermo is now a therapist, a certified addiction behavior specialist using the Minnesota Model, and the therapeutic director of Recovery Therapeutic Community in Valencia, with an inpatient center and outpatient services in Torrente.
His approach combines personal experience, professional training, and a simple idea: recovery begins when you stop fighting alone and allow yourself to be supported.
