G4 is canon to g5, but g5 is not canon to g4
This is the only way I can accept this generation existing

"A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is a bad children's story." - C. S. Lewis

G4 understood this. G5 did not.

Alicorns were so rare in G4, that there were only 5 in the entire running of the show within the show (not including the comics, though they are still super rare there). That's the ENTIRE point for Tirek, one of MLP's biggest villains!! The older princesses had to hide their magic with Twilight because she was new and Tirek had no idea she existed. If there was a whole alicorn city, either Tirek would've been way too overpowered, or they would've just gotten their help?? They created a massive plot hole in an older, beloved show for an unimportant plot convenience.

Damn. 9 years of lore and these writers couldn't be bothered to watch one episode.

In G4 they have a choice, in G5 they essentially HAVE to be nice to eachother or else they can’t have thier powers. One is motivated to be better, the other was motivated by selfishness

Making it a "sequel" to G4 was it biggest issue ignoring all lore and just destroying everything twilight did

It was quite simple: being a tie-in or a continuation of G4 instead of having its own lore and universe.

It was said in a comic that Celestia and Luna got their cutie marks, raising the sun and moon, respectively. And didn't Rarity said that "I didn't think it was possible for a pony to be born an alicorn, as it's a status given for performing a princess worthy deed" at which Celestia responded "the birth of an alicorn is something equestria has never seen "

Imagine if this all happened because of the alicorn after twilight. Twilight, after a millennia on the thrown she raises and passes the crown to the next alicorn who lives her life and starts raising the next ruler (Ophelia?). Messes up big time and has to freeze all magic, and here’s the catch, you don’t say it’s connected to G4 . Oh look at all these neat little Easter eggs of the mane 6, that back ground pony looks  like pinkie, neat. You get a core fan base who just like the new show, then near the end of season 1 at the climax you find twilights distoryed castle or some thing. Twilight and her friends still get their happy ending, but you get the post apocalyptic G4 world to mess around in.
There was a way they could have done this well, but they just hit all the wrong options and it upsets me so much.

Fun fact: That law is also the reason why Sonic & his friends have different voice actors in the Netflix series Sonic Prime compared to the Sonic video games. Such a bizarre law if you ask me.

Gen 5 only failed cause of one factor: Greed. Its a common trope for big companies like Hasbro.

The moral of the story is
Make it with love = success!
Make it for greed = failure!!!!

The biggest thing I hate about G5 is  that they included phones and internet... It ruins the immersion of this magical world that's separate to our own...

The reason they failed is that by attempting to milk the fan base built over the years of MLP, they instead brought huge backlash by making everything in the series completely irrelevant. Like making an entire kingdom run by the princess of friendship somehow undo the friendship of all races so badly, that it was worse before Celestial and Luna’s time. It would have been better if this was like, an alternate dimension where Alicorns didn’t exist yet or something.

9:53 G5 Twilight doesn't exist. She can't hurt you

G4 was lightning in a bottle. Impossible for any next gen to actually succed at the scale of G4 but they didn't have to fail this hard

15:06 G5 is the canonical bad end of g4

In other words Gen 5 showed that twilight sparkle was the worst princess ( even worse than the parallel timeline where nightmare won)

That was a very  stupid decision lmao

Canonically, Flurryheart is the first natural-born alicorn. I've seen apologists argue that G5's backstory isn't a retcon because "technically Celestia said that an alicorn had never been born in Equestrian but the alicorn nation is older than Equestria" but that doesn't work because if Celestia and Luna came from a race of natural alicorns, they wouldn't have been completely and utterly clueless about how to deal with Flurry Heart

Misty became my favorite. I sometimes think it would have been more interesting if she were the protagonist instead of Sunny and we see her get mixed up with Opaline and how she deals.

Another reason G5 failed was poor toy sales. Hasbro couldn't let go of G4. I think that G5's writing could have been salvaged if Hasbro had let G5 be it's own thing. Since the writing was in G4's shadow, the toys didn't have the same appeal as G4. The designs of the toys were also a factor.

I know collectors were disappointed in G4 because the toys mainly stuck to the Mane 6. Does anyone else remember how people had to make customs to get secondary characters? It was like G3's Core 7 era, but the designs were less horsey. If I remember correctly, the toys used polypropylene hair instead of nylon. (Polypropylene breaks down faster than nylon.) G4 brushables tended to be less appealing because of the lack of characters, a less equine appearance, and questionable hair.

G5 continued this trend. Most of the toys are the new Mane 6. From what I see on MLP Merch's website, there were only nine G5 characters in the main line that weren't the new Mane 6 (plus Sparky Sparkeroni and an unreleased Girl Scout pony). Hitch and Sprout never got brushable manes. Sprout only had three releases, two of which are mini figures. Opaline was only released twice, and one of those releases looks to be a Chinese exclusive. The number of brushable characters in G4 and G5 is crazy small compared to G1-G3.

G5's designs have horselike muzzles, but they're still less equine than G1-G3. The neck connects to the head like a human. The eyes face directly forward. Everything from the shoulders up is too human, IMO. I can't remember what kind of hair they have, but I'd rather have sculpted plastic hair than polypropylene. Edit: I don't care for the molded-closed wings some have, either.
