Motorcycle Winter Storage (Avoid This Costly Mistake!)

Monkeywood Garage

In this video, I explain my Triumph Street Triple winter storage prep. Covering everything from rust protection and fuel storage to battery maintenance, tyre care, oil changes and the biggest mistake many riders make when putting their bike away for winter. I’m not a professional mechanic but following these steps can help prevent unnecessary damage and avoid costly repairs when spring arrives.

All good advice. I'd just add one more thing to the "Don't do" list:

If you're storing your bike in an unheated garage do not cover it. After a few temperature and humidity cycles caused by changes in the weather the cover will trap moist air which will condense on your bike and cause corrosion

ima new rider and iv been told im still in the honeymoon peroid as im watching the weather charts daily for when its dry and im out ha. iv been told this will wear off and and will just leave my bike in storage through winter but TBH i love that chilled breeze in winter. im 46 by the way and what the hell have i been doing all me life, i should have passed me test years ago as all my worries and anxiety just goes when you Ride. cheers for video mate.

These are good tips. I consider myself lucky to live somewhere I can ride year round. I hope you’re getting along well through the winter.

Thanks for putting this out there. Sound advice. My only comment is prior to riding again, I always wipe away any excess ACF50 to reduce any dust, dirt and road grime attraction.

best video on this subject i've seen.

In central Sweden I do like most people, put the motorcycle down in October and start riding again in April May, in the south the season is longer and in the north it is shorter. I am 70 years old now so it has to be over 14'C for me to ride. Previously with bikes that have carburetors: change the oil, empty the tank, pour in some oil and shake it, drain the carburetors and pour a teaspoon of oil into the cylinder and turn it around.

Easier to Just keep riding there is no riding season as long as it isn't icy or snowing it's totally fine to ride anytime of year bikes hate not being ridden. Just wash it and maintain it.

I generally ride until October/November time if I can then put my bike to bed. I give her a good long run, then clean her, let her dry out for a few days, then I ACF50 her and fix any bits that need doing. Whip the battery out, lock and chain her up. She stays under the carport out of the weather and has a quality cover too (mainly to stop the pigeons crapping on her!). Come April or earlier if we're lucky, I charge the battery and get her out. Every Spring I fall in love with her again :-)

Good points, exactly the way I lay my bikes up for winter. I put Sta-Bil in my petrol and never have a problem with the starting or running come spring. Cheers.

Good advice thank you. I needed reminding to rotate the tyres of my bike which will sit for 4 months. :>)

I keep my Streetfighter V4S insured year round, so I can take it out for an hour or two any time it's dry and not salty. Best way to stop winter rot, is to keep the bike running 😉
