This is about secondary taxation through fines, penalties and charges.
Britain is an over regulated, over taxed, 0% growth economy.
Everything requires a license or permit.
Everything is illegal.
Everything is punishable with fines, penalties and charges.
This is about extracting revenue from the public.
The state is a parasite.

This exhaust law will spill over into right-to-repair and the requirement to only use OEM parts.

Birmingham council allow all motorcycles & scooters whatever the age or size to be exempt from the congestion charge, they consider 2 wheeled transport in the city to be positive for the Environment.

At present, it seems, they don't even know to what level motorcycles contribute to emission levels in the UK, but are willing to pass legislation without any evidence of change it would cause..

Making any rules like this retrospective would only be done for one reason and that is to get them off the road.

It's nothing to do with emissions, noise or gas. It's about controlling who can go where, how far and when.

Remember they wanted compulsory leg protectors on bikes back in the 80s

In general big daddy governments don't like motorcycles (not talking about deliveroo types or hooligans). Motorcyclists are like a subcommunity and think differently and are not easy to control. While I'm totally against excessive noise that cause discomfort and hearing damage to others and dangerous modifications, I don't see any reason for them other than extra cash to enforce such laws.

Im so glad that everything else is so great, that we're now dealing with this

My 2000 reg blackbird does not have a cat as standard , plus i cant re map it because of its age. I agree some exshusts are stupid loud . I have pair 300mm black widows on my bike i just keep the baffles in . Wish they would leave bikers alone .

You might want to watch the Motorcycle action group post on this very subject.
I don't think we have anything to concern us at this present time.
They have no base line Information to compare like for like and they are unlikely have this for the foreseeable future.
A freedom of information request from nag revealed they're pissing in the wind

A slip on exhaust doesn’t emit more emissions.

The main problem is the retrospective aspect of the law. My 2003 Triumph Speed Triple will not pass an MOT test simply because it has an aftermarket exhaust fitted by a previous owner in the last 23 years. Any idea of refitting an original exhaust for a 23-year-old motorcycle is laughable. I would say it is just a method to remove petrol vehicles from the road. Even as it is, it will still produce less emissions than a car of comparable age.

More bureaucratic BS, Made up by a bunch of freaking suits, more demos needed against these tyrants, Why are they concerned about this, when there are dangerous potholes everywhere.

@thesushifiend 1 day ago

It could never work. Bike exhausts don't last very long and it's impossible to buy OEM exhausts on older models. You have no choice but to fit an aftermarket exhaust.

@johnnyhall7065 2 days ago

it is about closing everything down to do with personal transport, manufacturing outlets, tuning, knowledge, I disagree, I think this law will be pushed through here. The plan is for Councils to licence private transport, if it doesn't fit their criteria, you will not be able to licenced for the road. To bond with the machine is especially bad, as far as the bureaucrats are concerned.

@williamrobertson7683 1 day ago

If you had to replace your exhaust after damage could you imagine what a bike manufacturer would charge you knowing you had no option.

@tobypoingdestre 1 day ago

If the standard part is £400 and the after market is £50 you going to buy the after market on

I bought my 23 MT10 from a dealer 2 miles on clock, as the original dealer had gone bust, it came with an Akrapovic fitted from said dealer, marked MT10 ( etched ). My local Yamaha dealer who sells bikes with the same after market exhausts has informed me when my bike needs its MOT, it will get an advisory!
