Will This Be the Most Disturbing Werewolf ever put to film?

Robert Eggers said WERWULF is "by far the darkest thing" he's ever written — and this is the man who made The Witch and Nosferatu. So we had to ask: is this about to be the most disturbing werewolf movie ever put to film?

In this video we break down the WERWULF trailer, the 13th-century history behind it (Gervase of Tilbury's "Of Men Who Were Wolves"), and the insane lengths Eggers went to — 35mm film, 1.37:1 Academy framing, an orthochromatic process that makes the cast look sickly and pale, Middle English dialogue, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson studying a live wolf for a transformation Eggers calls "incredibly extreme." Add Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe and you've got Eggers' most terrifying picture yet, hitting theaters December 25, 2026.

So I'm thinking we should expect a Robert Eggers zombie film in the future. So far he seems to be covering all the major horror themes, and I would be just as stoked for a zombie movie as I was for Nosferatu, and as I am for Werwulf.

Only director I can think of that I can honestly say I’ve liked all his movies so far , I’m 48 and a film junkie , so that’s quite the accomplishment , keep them coming Rob !!!!..

You can`t talk about a movie until AFTER you`ve seen it.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Werwulf. I've been craving a good big budget movie theater werewolf film for a very long time.

This one looks insane. 🤯 Eggers is easily one of my favorites. Some of the shots in this are hauntingly gorgeous. Can't wait!

I just read an article that Eggers even brought linguists on set to get ALL of the dialogue accurate to the time period of the movie setting. That's attention to detail to the max!!!

There’s an old lycanthrope woodcutting of a guy on all fours carrying a baby in his mouth. I wonder if that’s going to show up in this film.

He’s on track to be one of the best horror directors of all time. If he continues for 20 more years making absolutely bangers and keeps setting the bar. He may be the best.

I am beyond excited for this. I think you guys may have hit the nail on the head as far as plot and what happens. We shall see!

Eggers is the only director I would trust to do a werewolf movie set in the 1300s, this is way up his alley and dare I say this movie might be one of his greatest works yet.

I think a lot of people will go to the theaters waiting for the Hollywood cliche of a big wolf with humanoid features and get disappointed...
I hope Robert goes for a mix of the "beastial man" and the said humanoid wolf. Mixing like what those people back in the day believed they were dealing with having all that mystic and folklore versus what they actually were fighting against...
Sounds confusing and hard to make, but if there's anyone that can pull this off, it's Eggers.

High hopes for the movie too, looks incredible!

If there was someone who was perfect to make a Werewolf movie, it was definitely Eggers

I'm so ready for this movie. And could you maybe say 'subgenre' a few dozen times more in the next video?

@NeckRomancer2025 2 months ago

As to the title: everything about werewolves and lycanthropes in general should disturb and terrify you.

What they seem to have gotten down, judging by Aaron-Taylor Johnson's facial expression, is the fearful anticipation of what he knows is going to happen to him (again), it must be so frightening, and the bone-cracking, painful. Or he's the scapegoat for all of the townspeople's problems.

If you visit any of those wolf killer sites online, you could easily transpose the photos onto this 13th century background, and only the modern day dress would be different. Have a look - if you dare!

It does have such a grim, dark physically ugly look - and I think it is symbolic of some kind of internal ugliness. We'll see if my impressions are correct.
