I'm so glad that Christine and the people putting the documentary together were able to give Makelle her space and let hermake that choice about whether and when to come out with her story and tell her side of things. I'm really glad to hear your side of things, Makelle! It was really brave of you to come forward and share your story with us. something i’ve noticed that really sticks out to me is that all of the FLDS survivors you’ve had on understandably have the same short creek “accent” / intonation and distinct way of speaking…and also ALL of them laugh speak their way through recounting their experiences and trauma. As a fellow cult survivor, I know that laughing as a nervous system response is super common, but it really sticks with me when listening to the experiences of FLDS survivors because it is present in every single one of them.

I especially appreciate how you talked about how the brainwashing was working, even on you with how bold you were and how much you detested Sam. We are all vulnerable to this sort of cult tactic, and we shouldn't think that "it could never happen to me."

In the novel 1984, there's this thing called Room 101. It's different for everyone. It contains your biggest fear. For the main character, it's having his head locked n a cage, and the cage is filled with hungry rats.

I don't know what Sam's rat cage is. But I hope it finds him.

I am completely blown away by Makelle's courage and clarity. Makelle--you are a beacon of light and inspiration for all of us. I'm reminded of the story that appears in the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita: Arjuna is a warrior who has to fight the "bad guys"--the Kauravas, who illegally stole the kingdom from the "good guys" (the Pandavas) and committed atrocities against them. On the eve of the battle, Arjuna looks at the enemy camp and sees that some of his relatives and mentors are among the Kauravas. He's plunged into a deep spiritual and emotional crisis because he doesn't want to kill people he loves. He drops his bow, and refuses to fight. His charioteer, Lord Krishna, gives Arjuna a series of moral lessons. Arjuna ultimately is guided to fight. He goes into battle and wins. I don't see this a literal historical account of an actual war, or as encouragement to engage in literal bloodshed and war, but rather as a parable for exactly what you did. Like Arjuna, you felt guilt and sorrow at "betraying" family members whom you loved. But you had a powerful and clear moral compass and you were willing to take action so that a predator could no longer victimize people. Kudos and many blessings to you.
