Yes “The Shining” is the best horror movie of all time imo and definitely the greatest “haunted house” and haunted hotel movie of all time! Great atmosphere too Kubrick was a genius. Great cast too! A Classic!
This movie is a 10 out of 10. It's brilliant film making and acting. It will be remembered long after we are all gone. I just never found it truly scary. I own it on DVD and blu-ray. I watch it a few times each year. I just wish it scared me like other people
Part of what makes The Shining so unsettling to me is the lack of jumpscares. It's just the surreal atmosphere and Jack's descent into insanity that carries the horror.
It is the technical aspects of film that make the “Shining” the greatest of all horror movies. In terms of direction, lights, lenses, cinematography, dolly shots, dissolves, acting and the soundtrack nothing compares to it.
It never scared me once. I rewatched it a few years later thinking I might have missed something, but it still never scared me. I don’t know what all the fuss was about. I found The Exorcist scarier.
Psychological horror to me is more disturbing in movies than more consistently graphically bloody slasher/gory films. 'Psycho', The Shining', 'The Exorcist', 'The Sixth Sense', and obviously 'The Silence of the Lambs'. Like many have noted in this comment thread, this is not strictly a horror film, but a genre-transcending masterpiece by a genius film-maker.
its because about real life horror- domestic violence. jack doesnt commit 'adultery' in room 237- he commits p file in cest upon danny, thats what the film is really about. the hotel is a metaphor for a family home- coz thats where dv takes place- they say it multiple times in the film- ullman says to jack 'make yourself at home' in the interview, when shown their living quarters, jack says 'its very homey', and later when he has the axe he says 'wendy, im home'. the hptel being the usa and the indian genecide is the subplot- ullam says its SUPPOSED to be built on an indian burial ground' rather than 'supposedly', he also says 'we had to fight off indian attacks while building the place'.
The three horror movies that are on the top of my list is The Shining (1980) directed by Stanley Kubrick and The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter and Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott and it's because all three of them are all about isolation and I have considered all three of them the greatest horror movies ever created as well:).
I always considered this film to be a masterpiece of the 80s due to the tone, the characters, the soundtrack and the nightmarish feel of the overlook hotel
