Hello, i have just recently discovered your channel and you have some extremely fascinating and interesting videos. I just wanted to give you a big thank you for making them and putting the work in. I'm a very big Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd fan, love paintings, and also The Shining is one of my favorite movies. This is just the kind of deep dive channel i have been looking for, keep doing what you're doing man! You just earned a new subscriber, thank you again.

Room 237 would have been 217 (as in the book) but the hotel where the movie was filmed wanted Cubrick to pick another number - one that did not exist at the hotel irl. They thought that no one would want to stay in 217 after the movie was realeased (probably not correct at at 😂).

Thank you for your video! I have read the book probably 10 times and for me its the "real" the shining but its fun listening to other peoples thoughs about all of this.

Very intelligent dissection of
Of a complex theme . You brought fresh and valid ideas i am impressed. Enjoyed this very much.  Nicely done. Just subscribed.

I agree with your hypothesis that one of the overarching themes of the Shining is the threat of nuclear holocaust. There's a few others who've come to this conclusion over the last year, and given what's happening right now it couldn't be more important. We need to be like Danny and learn how to retrace our steps! Keep up the good work.

It’s extraordinary how we pull from experience and imagination to create. The more I hear about Mr. King’s work in retrospective the more people have found connections to other works of literature. Kubrick’s adaptation has a lot of his own experience with alcoholism. Unraveling a work can make it so much richer. The information you have here makes me think about that. Thanks for the video.

It's amazing how many elements Kubrick could tie into this movie. I watched a video a few weeks ago where the narrator went through showing how elements from Catcher in the Rye had been layered into The Shining. Also, another, showing how many cinematic influences there are, too.

Regarding Poe's religious beliefs, I would say that he was an occultist because in his poem The Raven, his central character has been examining occult books in an attempt to contact the dead and then receives messages from the underworld in the form of tapping and the raven itself. He also draws heavily on Greek pagan mythology for his references / symbols. He does draw on some Christian elements, but utilizes them in accord with an occultic interpretation of them.

Nice video. I assume you've read the book by now. I see why King chose that forward and how certain scenes in the book are very much like the Masque of the Red Death. Great take.

Thank you for this video.  I have often wondered about the role of Bill Watson, the Summer Caretaker of the Overlook.  I wonder if this could be your Prospero?

The dream sequence from Fail Safe. A cold war nuclear weapons story from the sixties. At the end of the movie, the man figures out what his dream means. I really didn't watch the movie closely, except when Henry Fonda was on screen. However, I am hooked on this symbol of the bull type beast. I'm sure we all know Stanley Kubrick would have seen this movie and then wanted to put a powerful beast symbol in HIS movie. (Just kidding on that last sentence!) I don't think that Stephen King's book should be too closely associated with Kubrick's film. It's well known that Kubrick changed so many facets of King's novel for his film version. What he didn't outright omit from the book, he altered, or inverted, or even invented new. That's why it should be made more clear to people that the film was "based" on the book. Kubrick kept the general plot and story, but he made a film that's very different from the book. And that's what upset King... that Kubrick changed it so much. In my opinion, I think what really bothered King the most... was that Kubrick's film version was so well done, and that it was such a masterpiece, in terms of film making. And some would argue that the film is even much better than the book. (myself included) Whether or not the film was a blockbuster hit when it was first released, is besides the point. Those with sense to know, could see that the film was visually stunning, and that it's psychological effect on audiences was strong. Stephen King could see that, and I think it bruised his ego that Kubrick discarded his screenplay, changed so many elements of the story, and didn't involve him in the film at all. I think King should be appreciative and thankful to Kubrick for the film. Kubrick's movie not only elevated the popularity and success of King's book and his career... but the film will go down in history as one of the greatest films of all time... and Stephen King gets to benefit from that, due to Kubrick's movie.
Anyhow, all that is a bit off the point of this video topic, but I just don't think Kubrick went in that deep with King's novel. Kubrick may have touched on some of the E.A. Poe story references, but perhaps not to the level that your describing here.

King Arthur didn't have a disease. That was the Fisher King. King Arthur got stabbed in the head.

Jack was stupid - he should have taken Wendy out when he had the chance he was right on top of her location - he would still have had plenty of time to deal with Dick Halloran or what ever his name was - after that all he would have had to do is wait for Danny to come back inside - mission accomplished ezzy peezy

Nuclear war. I don't think so. War in general, yes.

The Shining is unquestionably great, granted—perhaps the greatest horror film ever made (at least for my money); so I’m truly not trying to take anything away from it. But…the greatest American film ever? For that to be true, it would have to get past Citizen Kane; and, frankly, it canNOT. Not even close.

(1) "The Shining" is not "the Greatest American Film Ever Made."  But it is one of the GOAT horror films.  (2) Since you emphasize that TGAFEM should include "themes ... that are important to the United States of America ....," even if you are looking specifically for a movie about America's history with Indians -- then IMO "Dances With Wolves" is an example of a (much) better film than "The Shining."
