03:14 No contradiction, no harm
08:55 What is it that makes you glad to be born?
19:20 Existentialism
27:27 Today's homework

Today, I will explain what it means to be glad to be born.

When asked what the goals are in psychiatric treatment, I often say that it's these two things: things that you think are inevitable, and things that make you glad to be born.

Well, you know, Masuda, psychiatry, treatment, I think it's different for each person.

I think people often wonder what you're talking about and why these two things.

When they hear it, some people will think, "Oh, I see," and others will think, "What are you talking about?"
I get a lot of resistance.
I often get told by various psychiatrists and psychiatrists that I don't understand what you mean and what it's all about, but I often say that it's these two things.

It may seem confusing, but basically, it is impossible to express in words what the mind, healing, or what it means to be human, so I think it's about how to express what is impossible.
I'm just saying that these are the two things I use to express it in my own way.

When you try to express the world, you take a photograph.
Even if you take a photograph, you can only capture a partial image.
If you try to capture a 3D object in 2D, you can't capture a partial image.
So how do artists try to express the world again? They start using abstract paintings and various other things.

We psychiatrists are people who explore what the mind is while looking at various and diverse things, and we work to apply that knowledge to the patients in front of us.
How should I put it?
It's impossible to put into words what we realize and the understanding we have reached, so when I think about how to convey it in an easy-to-understand way, even when it's impossible, this is the result of my thinking.
Hmm, it's a bit difficult.
Something's not going well, but that's how it is.

I chose these two words because they are easy for many people to imagine when I want to focus on one thing from among all this infinite and complex information and convey it in an easy-to-understand way.

■Do not contradict, do no harm

But this is not so wrong.
In other words, one point is that it does not contradict past thinkers and philosophers.
Is it a bit skewed?
It does not contradict many people, especially Japanese thought and aesthetic sense, does it? It is something that can't be helped.

The idea of being glad to be born is a rather Christian and Western concept, but it does not contradict those, but it also has a Japanese feel to it and a bit of an idyllic feel to it, so I think it's good because it doesn't contradict.

Plus, this may surprise you, but it does not contradict modern psychiatry and psychology.
With clinical psychology.
I think that's wonderful too.
I know it's wonderful for me to say it, but I thought it was great.

I think it can't be helped that cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoanalysis are aiming for.
The goals of narrative therapy and family therapy are to understand who you are, to understand that you are glad to be born, and to face yourself, so the goal of mindfulness is also to feel glad to be born, so there is no contradiction.

In psychiatry, the state of recovery from depression is not dominated by anxiety or trauma, the frontal lobe is properly active and able to suppress overactivity of the amygdala, and reward system activity is properly suppressed, so I think it's good because there is no contradiction.
