Your favorite commander isn't the one that wins. It's the one you'd still play after it loses.
Most "find your commander" advice is a personality quiz, and personality quizzes don't work. Today I'm breaking down the only framework that actually matters: every Commander gives you a major and a minor in one of four things resource, interaction, evasion, or win condition. I'll walk through real examples (Nariv, Garland, Kruphix, and my own OTP, Yissan) and tell you exactly how I found mine, including a story about Baskin-Robbins that has nothing to do with Magic until suddenly it does.
If you've ever built a "good" deck that you never actually loved, this one's for you.

The first deck that really clicked for me was the Esper Knights precon. I loved being able to selectively churn through my deck with Jabari’s Eminence looting ability, then getting a direct benefit from it. This video gives a reason for that: resource generation + a win con. Been on the search for something similar, without the typal restriction, best I have so far is Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion. But I’ll keep looking for the right one! Appreciate you!
I think this is why Aragorn, King of Gondor is my favorite deck. I would say it has a major in win condition and evasion (when Aragorn attacks target creature can't block this turn, and as long as you're the monarch, creatures can't block this turn), it has a minor in resource (monarch drawing you a card on end step). But given that the monarch can be lost, every game becomes a puzzle for me on how to keep the monarch or get it back. While I don't think this means Aragorn has a minor in interaction, I think it pushes the game to have many interactions (attacking, blocking, removing creatures, etc) and I've built my deck to have a lot of interaction and card draw to support everything else.
Also why I think monarch is one of the best, if not the best, mechanics in Magic.
This was a thoughtful and unique formula. Major is the theme and minor is the backup plan!
I think my major is win condition (I love having cards that say… you win the game) and my minor is resources (often those cards are expensive mana wise and I don’t usually have the mana to capitalize on drawing them. I will come back once I find a commander!
