Very interesting. I went to basic training in the Army in New Jersey, June-July-August. One day they packed us into an un air conditioned room for a class on heat stroke. The instructor said “Look at the guy next to you, that’s what it looks like”. Still remember that day 48 years later. Can’t imagine laying out on that field wounded praying for someone to help you.

Thank you for the outstanding presentation. As mentioned in the beginning of the podcast, weather is as important as terrain. We all are told of the heavy downpour during the Confederate retreat, but until this presentation I have never seen a weather analysis of the weeks leading to the battle, and during the battle. Just fascinating!!  Fantastic guests!  Thank you for all of the efforts involved with bringing this presentation.

This is awesome. I'm glad the subject of the weather, at the time of the battle, is getting this kind of a focused discussion. And as an extra treat we get some meteorological history along with it. (The list of books I want to get just keeps getting longer and longer lol.)
Great episode, BoGP! And many thanks to Jeff Harding and Dr Jon Nese for sharing their time and their knowledge with us!

Congrats Jody on the new gig! Great episode, everyone!

This is a fine discussion touching on a usually unexplored factor that affected combat during the Civil War. As far as the flooded ford on the Potomac, nothing was mentioned regarding the Potomac watershed upriver of Falling Waters. That area is more than half of the entire watershed. The flood level at the end of Lee's retreat was the result of an enormous area where rain possibly fell and most of which drained into the Potomac. Also, in Civil War military terms, a ford that men, guns and wagons normally could traverse would only have to rise 5 or 6 feet to be quite impassable without pontoon bridging.

wonderful presentation
