Tuba I find it hard to reconcile the idea that the era of street wear was led by givenchy Dior or “led from Paris”. Street wear as a movement was heavily inspired by (black) American fashion ( not high fashion ones) and the European brands were chasing a fashion movement juggernaut that still is the area of product that drives the majority of the fashion conglomerates sales. If we are discussing the NYFW brands only maybe it stands up but I think that is major omission here.

Minor nit: Ed Hardy, Juicy and many of the 2000s fashions you site in the video are LA fashion influence, not NY.

25:36 this sums up khaite so accurately for me. the clothes look cool and trendy, but the woman who wears it will have to try hard (from a styling perspective) to not look like a typical cool girl influencer - a look that is exhausted here in new york, and makes you look like you're chronically online. if she can impose her own styling touches it can create an interesting look because khaite does have a nice offering

You completely skipped over Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott, Hood by Air, Rodarte, Eckhaus Latta, and other designers who were quintessential in redefining American fashion in the 2000-10s by combining pop art/streetwear with high fashion.

Back in the day everyone who was "in" wore the same stuff ( I'm not saying this negatively just a huge generalization ). When I was in high school, I'm 47, all the cool kids wore the same thing. It was kind of like that until the mid to late 2000's. You bought magazines to see what people wore and we all were constantly at the mall. Nowadays you can just get on your phone or whatever and find someone you like and dress like them. Back then you were told how to dress ( nirvana, Marilyn manson, Britney, etc ) now you can dress however you want and be accepted. There are so many references. You also would watch MTV to see how to dress lol.

Remember Halston? Gone way too early and iconic.

When you talk about American fashion you have to go back and mention NORELL he made clothes that were couture very much like Paris, Bonnie Cashin which a lot of the Europeans copy her, she worked in the 60s for COACH, HALSTON created minimalism, you have to read the battle of Versailles when American designers took their clothes to the palace, Perry Elllis was a very creative designer along with Geoffrey Beene.  And Marc Jacobs has been very creative, he worked for Louis Vuitton.  There’s many more designers that I could mentions from the US

I think you can be a very American brand even if you’re showing in Europe. I think Thom Browne is very NYC even though he doesn’t show there anymore. It’s probably a decision about where they’ll get the most exposure and that’s in Milan or Paris. Also since they’re owned by an Italian company now probably helps.

Love hearing the outsider’s depiction of the market. Been designing since 87, had my own brand in the 00’s. You focus on what you see in hindsight but there was another perspective from within when thinking about what to design each season throughout those decades.
