"There was definitely some sexual tension between Five and Lila because of that one time Lila fought Five while naked in the bathhouse" is an interesting take. If anything, I liked that scene for being so platonic, it feels very liberating to very clearly have a body and for it to not be seen under a sexualizing gaze. I appreciated how asexual the female nudity was actually, and I have a hard time seeing it as a sexual scene just because her body is in it, the steam censors her just to emphasize that we're not supposed to oggle at her, she is vulnerable yet untouchable. She is powerful enough that it does not matter that she's naked. No one cares that she is. Her body is irrelevant. That's so cool.
Minor thing but it was a huge missed opportunity to show old versions Five in the diner along with a normal Five who looked like a 30 year old, a Five who never ran away to the future. I know its minor but it shows how much potential they missed in this awful rushed dogcrap season.
I liked the concept for the ending but everything was sooo rushed. The villains were pointless. They had Nick Offerman and Megan Mullaly; how do you mess that up? Almost everyone had a character reset and they didn't feel like the people we knew, which just broke my heart. This show deserved a much better ending with 10 episodes. I still remember the magic and connection in the first episode even when they danced in separate rooms. That was not in this season. I didn't watch Umbrella Academy for the plot (okay a little for the plot) but because the Hargreeves were absolute manic magic as a family. And that madness and magic was lacking. Netflix should have given this show a good ending.
"A really somber, adult tone" There's a 10 minute scene of people projectile puking while Baby Shark plays in the background nonstop on the second episode
Personally, I didn’t realise that the season was only 6 episodes long until I was on the last episode. It felt like it was building slightly quicker than usual yet a perfectly acceptable rate for a 10 episode season. However by the time I realised that was the last episode I’d watch, I felt as if the plot threads that I wanted to be tied up couldn’t be. I did like the concept of them dying to finally rid the world of the apocalypse but we needed more time with the characters to really feel the whole weight of how that choice to sacrifice themselves truly made them feel. Ben and Jennifer’s relationship makes no sense because it happens in two episodes. They needed more time to flesh everything out further. I think you’re excusing the poor writing by saying “that’s the point”. The writing was fantastic for the first two seasons and these last two just really dropped the ball in my opinion.
If Reginald configured how the new universe worked why didn't he just erase Marigold from the universe to prevent the cleanse? And if he couldn't when the new universe started why didn't he just have Jennifer be killed?
Why did Luther get an ape body when they got their powers? That's not apart of his power.
If Reginald altered the kids' memories to forget exactly how Ben died then why didn't he do the same for Vanya to make her forget she had powers?
So Lila saved Claire and her kids by putting them into the inter-dimensional train okay got that part, but since their parents don't exist but they are running around in this timeline with no parents that birthed them and that this is the ONLY timeline now. Shouldn't this trigger another Kugelblitz? An impossibility for an impossibility like Five said? So really no, it's not a good ending, the Kugelblitz ends up destroying the original timeline and the umbrella academy died for nothing. The end :) .
I think they were going for an ending similar to the one in Dark. Howerer, in Dark, by the end, both the characters and audience are convinced that there is no other solution but to sacrifice themselves to amend the time line because everything is such a mess and there is no other way of fixing it. In the UA I found this less convincing as the only option and didn't find it entirely believable that the characters would be so quickly convinced to sacrifice themselves.
35:32 honestly I agree with you here. Luther and arguably Diego are the most morally good characters and I think it has so much to do with how much being a hero defines their person. Luther spent 30 years essentially trying to be Superman and Diego Batman.
If the Marigold is the issue, couldn't the entire season been avoided if Ben didn't spike everyones drink or if Reginald killed Jennifer instead of just hiding her in a random town???
I feel the "they were together for 7 years" is such a cop out excuse, 5 spends like 45 years with the conviction to save his family from the apocalypse, using his feelings for his family to keep him motivated the entire time but then after 7 years hes like "nah screw diego imma get with his wife"
I definitely agree with you about Jennifer. I find her intriguing, and I really enjoyed the acting of what little we see of her. Unfortunately, we don't actually get to know her, which was such a shame.
I really didn't like season 4. So many plotholes, so many characters are acting way out of character and there's stuff they straight up retconned, plus the sfx were really hit or miss. And don't even get me started on Lila and Five...
