What kind of man willingly chooses to live in the most forgotten and terrifying place on earth, surrounded by rotting bodies, without medicine, law, or hope? Saint Damien of Molokai did. In this video, you'll discover the devastating and extraordinary story of the Belgian priest who, in the 19th century, traveled to the Kalaupapa Peninsula in Hawaii—a human dumping ground where the government threw lepers into the sea to swim to shore on their own—and decided to stay forever. You'll learn how he slept under a tree because the sick had no homes, how he made more than 2,000 coffins with his own hands while the living watched, waiting their turn, and the most chilling moment of all—the morning he poured boiling water over his feet, felt absolutely nothing, and knew that leprosy had finally claimed him. Instead of fleeing, he climbed into the pulpit and forever changed his greeting: from "My brothers" to "We the lepers." A story of absolute love, total sacrifice, and holiness that defies everything we believe is possible in a human being.
