In 1665, plague reached a small village in Derbyshire. The story we have been told for generations is that its people chose to shut themselves in so that strangers might live. But how much of that story can the surviving record actually support?
Tonight, Mr. Ravenhurst walks through Eyam: the parcel of cloth, the first burials, the summer of 1666, the families at Riley, the grieving letter of a rector who had just lost his wife, and the three centuries of poets, clergymen and local historians who shaped what we now call the legend.
We separate what is documented from what was added later, and we stop, every time, where the record stops.
Not a story of heroes and villains. A story about how a community decides what to remember.
