Indira Gandhi: The Woman Who Ruled India | FULL DOC | SLICE WHO

SLICE Who?

51,719 views

Few leaders in modern India inspire such divided memories as Indira Gandhi. Daughter of Nehru, architect of India’s 1971 victory over Pakistan, and the country’s first and only female Prime Minister, she rose to embody strength, ambition and national power on a historic scale.

But her story is also one of fear, control and deep political rupture. From the Bangladesh war to the Emergency, from dynastic rule to Operation Blue Star and her assassination in 1984, this documentary traces the rise of a leader whose charisma, ruthlessness and contradictions still shape India’s political memory.

Every few decades, India makes the same mistake of looking at politicians as if they are some kind of messiah. In the 80s, it was Indira. Now it is Modi. Religion must be kept out of politics, and the freedom of expression and the right to live with dignity must be protected for all the communities living in India. My prayers to the families of the victims of the anti-Sikh riots.

I was born in the 90s but even then her stories & documentaries make me feel a proud Indian. We need more of her. I can see an unparalleled similarities between her and Modi despite affiliation to different political ideology.

As a Bangladeshi, I will always be grateful to her for aiding our founder Sheikh Mujib and the Mukti Bahini.

too much success and too long in power makes leaders go mad. this cheme of "he or she isnt responsible for this, but...." is well known. good content.

This is so misrepresented. You are presenting the side of the ruling class who would have us believe she was vile and autocratic. In fact I remember the "emergency" as a golden period where corruption was practically zero. Prices were down. Government offices worked like well oiled machines. She won wars. She could stare down America. She is worth a thousand Modis.

While the film describes her as an 'autocratic leader' [00:37], it is important to note that many of her supporters viewed her as a 'strong democrat' who prioritized India's stability and sovereignty above all else [02:31]. To many, she wasn't autocratic toward the people, but rather a leader who ensured that civil liberties and the secular fabric of the nation remained a core mission during her tenure [42:34], effectively navigating an 'almost ungovernable nation' [45:10].

She was one of the greatest Prime
ministers India has ever had.

Watch your words!!...She was not autocratic! She was just greatly ambitious and an even greater executor of her great plans. She was democratic!

@campbell1551 5 months ago

If you call her a dictator wait for a few more year and the likes of Tavleen Singh will have to eat her words she was a leader who stirred India out of crises and had a vision no leader is exemplary and have their own shortcomings!
Some one needs to show Tavleen Singh her place she thinks no end of herself!!

Indira: Unchallenged. Educated. Classy. Fearless. Arrogant. Tyrant. Clever. Long term view.
Modi: Unchallenged. Uneducated. Cringe. Scared. Obnoxious. Tyrant. Stupid. Short term view.
