India and Pakistan: Lives Divided by Partition I SLICE HISTORY | FULL DOCUMENTARY

SLICE History

In August 1947, British India was divided into India and Pakistan after more than 200 years of British rule. The decision followed years of political deadlock between leaders including Jawaharlal Nehru, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten.

The film traces the events leading to Partition, from the Quit India movement and the Cabinet Mission to Direct Action Day, communal riots and the rushed transfer of power in 1947.

Through survivor testimonies from Lahore, Karachi, Punjab and Wagah, it examines the human cost of Partition: displacement, violence, divided families and one of the largest human migrations in history, with more than a million deaths.

Seventy years later, the memories of survivors such as Dilip Kaur, Sheikh Riaz Ahmed and Dr Balwinder Singh show how Partition continues to shape lives on both sides of the India Pakistan border.

Watch to understand how 1947 still echoes today.

Train to Pakistan
by Khushwant Singh
“In the summer of 1947, when the creation of the state of Pakistan was formally announced, ten million people—Muslims and Hindus and Sikhs—were in flight. By the time the monsoon broke, almost a million of them were dead, and all of northern India was in arms, in terror, or in hiding. The only remaining oases of peace were a scatter of little villages lost in the remote reaches of the frontier. One of these villages was Mano Majra.”

It is a place, Khushwant Singh goes on to tell us at the beginning of this classic novel, where Sikhs and Muslims have lived together in peace for hundreds of years. Then one day, at the end of the summer, the “ghost train” arrives, a silent, incredible funeral train loaded with the bodies of thousands of refugees, bringing the village its first taste of the horrors of the civil war. Train to Pakistan is the story of this isolated village that is plunged into the abyss of religious hate. It is also the story of a Sikh boy and a Muslim girl whose love endured and transcends the ravages of war.

As a Sindhi we lost our whole land and our community. Many of the grandchildren can’t speak, read, or write Sindhi. Soon it will be a lost community. We are dispersed throughout the world.

Easy to blame Brits. The fact is that the Brits created the country, which broke down once Brits left. Just like Africa, going back to tribal societies because the modern states created by the colonists cannot hold once the colonist left.

Sadly so many Sikhs were massacred in Pakistan

@sesikantemneni 3 months ago

There is a bit of narration around the 6M.44S mark. Says "there are 20 million Muslims in British India making up about 5% of the population". That is factually incorrect. Perhaps a simple oversight. There were, in fact, 90+ million Muslims before partition making up about 24-25% of the population.

violence was on both sides that's fact = blame is on both sides

A united india would've prevented the mass migration of hindus sikhs and muslims from india pakistan and bangladesh to flock to countries like the US, Canada, UK so on and so forth. It would've been self sustainable and in harmony along cultural lines if only they weren't exposed to the venom of politicians. That was where the separation really began.

If people wish to massacre each simply on the basis of their differing religious beliefs, then they have to take responsibility for their actions. The British can be critised for other aspects of their rule of India, but they are not responsible for hatred arising from differing religious beliefs. After all, Hindus and Muslims had been at each others throats long before the British arrived on the scene.

The British caused this whole mess that you see today no doubt about it. If Nataji /Subhash Chandra Bose was not murdered by the British by shooting down his plane in 1945… There would’ve been a unit India with him being the Prime Minister no doubt about it

The British did not rule India with ‘an iron hand’. The actual internecine killing ACTUALLY started AFTER they left. The British are not saints but others have to take RESPONSIBILITY where it is due. Such are the vicissitudes of unconditionally uncomfortable history.
