Teen Titans Made An Episode About GROOMING...

166,007 views

In the Teen Titans episode “Spellbound,” Raven forms a connection with Malchior, someone who makes her feel understood, appreciated, and less alone. But beneath that connection is a disturbing pattern of grooming, manipulation, love bombing, deception, and exploitation.

In this video, we’re breaking down how Malchior gained Raven’s trust, used her vulnerabilities against her, pushed her boundaries, and manipulated her into giving him exactly what he wanted. We’ll also explore the deeper symbolism throughout the episode and why “Spellbound” feels so much more disturbing when you watch it as an adult.

Surprisingly, Teen Titans had a lot of villains that felt like groomer allegories: Melchior, Slade, and even Brother Blood! It really was one of the darkest shows Cartoon Network had on their channel (and one of their best).

Especially with slade bro he was a massive weirdo

To answer your question about her age, Raven turned 16 in season 4 in the episode “birthmark”, so she was 15 here. In ttg, she’s claimed as immortal

Interesting thing about this is that it mirrors why Raven isn't supposed to feel anything. Her father Trigon, can use her emotions to manipulate her into summoning him. This episode shows EXACTLY how that can happen.

I really like how they designed the paper version of Malchior. His eyes are very pretty and charming like you'd expect from a princely bishounen pretty-boy sort of character (likely intentional given how anime-inspired TT was), but also have very sharp eyelashes and are drawn in such a way where his eye shape gives the impression that he's perpetually glaring at you. It conveys what he is in this episode excellently. Pretty, charming, a little intense... and then you keep looking and watching the episode and realize the sharpness and danger that was there from the start. Ugh, I love this show! So much care was put into it!!

This episode definitely does hit different as an adult. Like, obviously as a kid you’re like ‘this dude bad’ but the gaslighting and grooming is so crazy here. However I like that it was Raven they used for this story, because Raven’s not stupid. She’s actually very intelligent and isn’t one to easily trust. But by using her, it shows that it doesn’t matter how smart you are or how smart you think you are, anyone is susceptible to this kind of manipulation given the right conditions.

Also, the way Malchior’s face is always obscured in some way. When he’s in the book, half the page is torn away. When he’s in the more humanoid form, literally all you can see are his eyes again. He’s always hidden and you can never see what he’s thinking or feeling.

Man this feels like those internet relationships. A quiet, introverted kid gets into a relationship with an older person who turns out not to be what he says he is. But she had no way of knowing bc he could tell her anything.

This felt a lot like internet grooming specifically. She spends all day in her room, talking to him. He'll be there in the morning. She's emerging from her room changed... It's 100% about internet predators, something that definitely existed before this episode, but which were becoming much more well known around this time.

@velocijaster2102 1 month ago

It's crazy. I just watched videos about the AI chatbots inducing psychosis. The bots use all the same grooming tactics. The us v them mentality. The compliments. The feeling of "being known".

3:49, to be fair, she’s a wielder of magic and the daughter of an interdimensional demon. This could’ve been the average Tuesday to her 😭

According to the creators of the show, this episode was supposed to be a message about teenagers and online predators

This story features one of my favorite fairytale morals. “Don’t fall for obvious traps no matter how desperate you are. HOWEVER, should you find yourself doing so, have all your wits about you to escape.”

@Nyzahnewton 1 month ago

Thank you for making this. I always felt unnerved by this episode, even before I even knew what grooming was. The scene where Malchior goes from a masked man to a full on dragon was such an accurate depiction of catfishing. And this came out way before social media became what it is now.

Wonderful analysis as always! 👏🏾🫶🏾

This episode is quite dark when you see the metaphor, Raven alludes to him getting what he wanted from her (which was getting freed); but it’s one of those things that could be used as a Metaphor for S*x.
Teen Titans always use stuff that could happen to teens and a lot teens have sadly gone through the experience of sleeping with someone older they thought liked them, but just ended up wanting intercourse.

Honestly the fact that this guy gave me Slade vibes with how Slade was towards Terra was a big red flag

@WanderingRagabond 1 month ago (edited)

Beast Boy didn't FULLY respect Raven's space tho. He turned into a fly to breach the sanctity of her bedroom, something she has always expressed was unacceptable.

Granted, there are situations where it's forgivable to overstep, when it's done out of genuine concern that a loved one is in danger and not aware of it. But let's give the boy only the credit he's actually due.

EDIT: Called Beast Boy just "Beast" for some reason.

@timmckee6340 1 month ago

I never thought about this being about grooming but yeah it is

I really did feel for raven in this one, she is perceived by her team, best boy in particular as “creepy” and given that she’s the daughter of a demon who want to destroy the world that would hint a nerve with her. She’s always had to keep her emotions in check as if she doesn’t she could hurt or kill someone and she truly must feel alone so often. Then suddenly someone comes along and seems to understand her, comfort her and want to help her, of course she’s be attracted to that.

worse is that his is how the real world works as noted on tv tropes is that how Malchior acted is “similar to how sexual predators manipulate teenagers by lying about who they are and using their vulnerability and loneliness to manipulate them, and their victims often not figuring it out before it's too late.”

one of the bright spot, in fact one of the brightest spots in the ENTIRE series is the end were Beast Boy becomes the one to comfort Raven, he doesn’t tell she’s NOT creepy both she and he KNOW that she is, but that donest mean she’s alone she still can find support in her friends.

It's quite appropriate how often the villains in TT are groomers real threats for kids Slade, Brother Blood and Melchior (and even Blackfire attempting to pawn off Starfire as royalty often did) but it also shows how these threats can be countered like having a support system, friends and family even if we are also shown how tragic such tales can be like with Terra.
