As a goth that grew up with South Park, I loved the goth kids because they were a hilarious (and very valid) criticism of my subculture. It's important to be able to laugh at yourselves, which is a core component of goth culture IMO
Dude, the fans who like the goth kids aren't missing the joke. We understand and love the joke. I for one had a goth/emo phase around that age, a little older, because I was actually being abused, and the goth kids of South Park make me nostalgic for the fun and self-expressive parts of that time in my life. Speaking of which, the way Matt and Trey understand the subtle differences between goth, emo, and scene subcultures that look the same from the outside was ALSO hilarious.
Setting up that Jimmy has a stutter, and then having Stan choose a word that starts with Cont- for Jimmy to try and relay to Wendy is one of the all-time best ways to get away with repeatedly saying the C-word on television 😂
In Germany, this episode is not called "Raisins" but "Wir sind Gruftis" (We are Goths), referencing the band "Wir sind Helden" (We are Heroes) as they actually got the band members to voice the Goths for this episode. You can certainly tell that they aren't voiced by actual voice actors, but I think it kind of works that the goths talk so differently from everyone else. Not to mention how German Firkle has a deep ass voice that is just as funny as the child-voice in the original.
I think the training part of this episode at Raisins is also to show that Raisins is built on manipulating kids like Butters, and to show that Lexus is just doing how she was trained when she first joined. It makes her not as much of a bad guy as it would be if you never show that scene.
Regarding the Goth kids: I was pretty active in alternative circles when I was a kid. I met lots of Goth and Emo kids who dressed pretty differently than what you expect. I regularly wore (and still wear) hawaii shirts and was never excluded, quite the opposite in fact.
I guess people confuse the getting dressed up part of alt/dark with everyday clothes and attitude.
My favorite episode is Awesom-O but Butters' speech at the end of Raisins is my favorite moment of his. It's the moment that elevated him from simply a favorite character to a comfort character. Butters means so much to me.
