Open ribs are called rib flares in English. Simply put, it's like taking a deep breath and then stopping. This means the diaphragm has already contracted too much, leaving no room for further contraction. If you contract your biceps, your arms are already folded, right? So, if you try to fold your arms further, you have limited range of motion. Similarly, if you try to inhale more, your diaphragm won't have enough room to move, resulting in shallow breathing. Furthermore, because you're not breathing through your nose, your mouth will always be open. Naturally, you'll become short of breath and easily fatigued during exercise. No matter how many times you hear advice to tighten your stomach, maintain abdominal pressure, and practice abdominal breathing, it's often difficult to achieve these results because your ribs are already open.
Furthermore, these rib problems can wreak havoc on your shoulders and neck. Because the front of the body is open, the back is closed, meaning it's overly contracted and stiff. This affects the movement of the shoulder blades. If the shoulder blades don't move properly, the serratus anterior muscles can't function properly, and when performing upper body exercises, only muscles like the trapezius and the sternocleidomastoid muscles on the side of the neck become overly tense.
And when I teach, I often encounter people like this. They believe they have rounded shoulders, so they try to straighten them by arching their backs, which causes their ribs to protrude, leading to an anterior tilt, creating a vicious cycle.
