I find what you do fascinating because a great grandfather was a policeman rising to be inspector and then became a private detective.

My mother was endlessly annoying with her stupid little notes. They always had a smiley face. I guess she meant it to soften the fact that she was asking for something. It came across as cowardice & a way of refusing to relate to her children. I hated those notes. But, my mother is 96 and I’m not in prison, so…

Would love these to be released as podcast so i can listen to them in car and on walks.

Miss Keyes was so kind.  She tried to give John Lee many chances to give him the base to have a stable, honest life.  Some people, sadly, are so self entitled, they take umbrage to their mentor.  John Lee,taking revenge for his own failings, killed the only person who tried to help him.

Is an interesting city…. I grew up there, went to school and church there. My parents, sister and husband are buried in Forest Home Cemetery; it’s on the Southside, along Forest Home Avenue……

One very important thing we Americans can learn from this story, is that the horrific long-term effects of taking away human dignity is not limited to the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. The circumstances surrounding all four of the house servants makes a strong case against aristocracy and the oligarchic capitalism that has since those times replaced it. It makes a good case for strong social services that would have helped a young man like John Lee realize his potential via other opportunities despite his unfortunate illness; services that could have given him the option to refuse the humiliation of having to work amongst women then considered misfits for a woman (humiliating enough in those days) whose own life choices / circumstances blinded her to the dignity and needs of a young able bodied man with a future.  A lot of people resort to crime when society places them in boxes, forcing them to depend solely on money and giving them no choice but to conform to unreasonable, highly discriminatory standards.
