I didn't expect this to be THAT deep...
What other songs got a message like this??

You have heard CCR in almost every Vietnam movie ever made!😊

Rich mans war, poor mans fight.

Commentary on class. Who goes to war? Who pays taxes? Who actually makes the sacrifices in society?

This song was made during Vietnam, but nothing has changed.

I graduated  high school in 1968, as our community was heavily Hispanic, most of the boys from my graduating class were immediately drafted and sent to Vietnam.  Some fled to Canada.  It was a very polarizing time - 18 year olds were making life and death decisions.

“War” by Edwin Starr, “What’s going on” by Marvin Gaye & “For what it’s worth “ by Buffalo Springfield.

My uncle was sent to Vietnam and came back strung out on heroin. He had too much PTSD to get off of it (he tried many times,) and ended up getting murdered over a drug deal in a gas station  bathroom in Inglewood CA. That war destroyed people in a million different ways.

Anti Vietnam war song . The draft was in effect back then. Rich kids usually got out of the draft back then by using college deferments and paid for physical disqualifications for the military. I  those days there weren’t student loans and grants available for lower income students to attend college . That left 18 year hs graduates being drafted right and left as they couldn’t afford college. Great reaction  thanks

President Bonespurs is a great example of what this song represents

My 9th grade English teacher got drafted and had to quit after his first year teaching. We loved him.
All of us were afraid for our older brothers getting drafted. This song hit hard back then!

Don't ever let them bring back the draft.

This hit like a bomb during the Vietnam war.

Fogertry served in Vietnam. He sings from experience.

My grandmother said it wasn’t just poor kids. It was middle class America kids. There was a draft.

Yes, this song is always in Vietnam War movies because it's about how young men from rich families always managed to avoid going to Vietnam, while many poorer families' sons were getting drafted day after day & coming back in coffins. No 'Senator's sons' were going to war when there were poor people to fight in their place. Very true story about that time.

Edwin Starr - WAR

This song is relevant to today's crisis also

Definitely a great protest song. I'm sure glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s. We had the absolute best music. After birth control, before AIDS, and NO cameras everywhere to affect your life!

Probably the most iconic song from my era. (Yes, I'm old.)

As I understand it, John wrote this song when he got his draft notice from the mail box. He read it over and over again and held his head in his hands and said, “ It ain’t me!”
