Laying here 24 hours after acl surgery on the couch with an electric ice machine cooling down my throbbing knee. Never been so happy to not be in the navy in the 17-1800's

The effect of scurvy that freaked me out is that all scar tissue can reopen and if you have had major surgery that might mean death. Having all previous wounds come back sounds like a curse or something out of nightmare.

"War is the only proper school of the surgeon" - Hippocrates

My wife is a huge history buff, and she has been rather impressed by your collection of knowledge. Love the videos mate

I was not aware that's where the "blowing smoke..." turn of phrase came from.

Horatio Nelson was a perfect example of this. By all accounts, my man looked like chew toy that was mauled by a pitbull after countless injuries and procedures done by ship doctors

NoOoOo not naval surgery. I'm gonna watch it, but I feel nauseous before even starting lol. I mean, I'll watch every single video regardless of how I feel about it because I'm a big fan of your channel.

I've watched dozens if not hundreds of your videos describing torture, punishment, war, medical procedures and so on, and none have made me wince in pain the way this one did. Perhaps because I'm an amputee myself and can easily imagine what this would have been like.

Considering how 'primitive' our medical and surgical knowledge was at this time, and the conditions that any surgeon would be under - particularly once battle had been entered - it is a miracle that anyone survived the knife. Yes, we bag surgery from that time as barbaric, justifiably, but a lot more men would have died without this intervention.

By "medicine", we mean "whatever is available and God's mercy".

Trepanning is simply a forerunner of the modern operations to remove blood clots pressing on the brain or a piece of skull to prevent death from brain swelling.

Not so fun fact: MASH units trained at Martin Luthor King Jr. Outpatient Center in LA. The gang violence was so horrifically bad  that airforce trainees were sent to get the best experience in dealing with mass casualty situations,  gun trauma, etc.

Is this where the scene from toy story 1 comes from? Buzz Lightyear is in Sid's house. He's at the tea party with a shattered arm and says " I'm Mrs Nisbet" ?

Lol I love how you know your audience is gonna watch even through the ad, as a hallmark to the quality of your content, you are one of the only channels I WILL watch whatever sponsor or ad read

I got news for ya. Trepanation is still not uncommon today. I assisted in sn emergency trepanation when l was still a student. The patient had suffered a brain aneurysm. The neurosurgeon had to get blood off the patient's brain and get it off now. He used a big stainless steel brace and bit with a small surgical hole saw. About 10 or 12 cranks and he popped out about s half inch plug of skull. He used forceps to insert a rubber drainage tube.  Stitched it in place with a couple of sutures to kerp it from falling out.  He did it right in the ICU room. The whole thing took less than 10 minutes. Then he went to scrub up properly and we rushed the patient up to the OR for surgery.

I have Premium, but I enjoy your channel so much I still sat through the sponsor ad. Keep it up dude. Your videos are an oasis in this sea of AI slop.
