LYRIC AND SUBTEXT EXERCISE: A lot of you have been wondering about this kind of lyrical subtext work. Here is an example of a song that I covered, "Sound of Silence" I used this song to tell the story of the hardest 6 months of my life. I was falsely diagnosed with ALS in 2022 and for 6 months i went through the five stages of grief, I used this song to portray that story, you'll notice throughout this song each part represents the 5 stages of grief, you'll also notice that the vocal colors ends in a very similar way as they began. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GzkDnOnZYE&list=RD-GzkDnOnZYE&start_radio=1

If I remember correctly, the original singer, Jutes, said that this song is sung from his perspective talking to his depression as if it’s a person. I thought it was about a toxic relationship too. But knowing the intent really makes the song hit harder and she expresses it perfectly.

I can't say how many reactors I have watched that just skip over the "if this is" lyrics ascending scream. Thank you for giving it the love I feel it truly deserves!!!

I suspect that just like in Unethical, the other character is herself..

I see the lyrics have many meanings to many people. For me, the horror film Obsession comes to mind. I picture Maphra singing from the tragic character Nikki who because of a wish placed on her for her to be obsessed with the main character it's as though she becomes possessed by this demon forcing her to love this man against everything Nikki wants. So she's fighting this internal demon forcing her to feel something she can't possibly feel. And this fight with the demon is "kill or be killed" and we know in the movie she seems like she's already dead. Everything in the later chorus and verses seems like a shifting perspective between the demon and her (demon-"No one loves you like I do, you can run but I'll find you...I'll make you hurt just like I do, they'll see my work when they find you)...then back to Nikki crying to be set free or surrendering to her fate....that's how my brain works at least...😂🖤🤘🤘

The most complete breakdown of lyrics and vocal ability right here. You both rock! Amazing reaction!! 🔥🔥🔥🤘

I think it a battle between the voice of depression and herself in her head.

9:10 I believe Jutes has said that this song is about a battle with his inner self

‘Soonsday’ finally arrived and her latest is fire AF, and instantly my new favorite! She flexes on this one. Jutes commented: "This is sick. I'm honored. You're awesome" and Maphra replied, "thank you so much! I absolutely love your music, this song was so much fun to cover!" When this cover was posted to her Instagram, he also commented: “It’s ur song now”. And in it’s posting on Tik Tok: “the goat”. When asked where the song’s ‘message’ came from, Jutes (Jordan) said that like in some of his other songs, he likes to personify his depression and sing to it as if it’s a real person. Sort of a self-therapy session. Not sure if Maphra saw that interview topic before she decided to cover the song, or if she somehow relates to it in some other way. However it came about, another phenomenal version of the song was born. With that said, I’m sure the ‘purist’ types will be here soon to debate ‘production. #MaphraSquad #TheDoomed

#Maphra sings “Kill or Be Killed” like she has cornered the shadow that’s been following her for years. The velvet in her voice gives it somewhere to hide; then the screams tear the walls down, one by one, until all that darkness has left is a name and nowhere to run.

Maphra is awesome!

Excellent breakdown, both of the vocal techniques and lyrics! Maphra gave a kill or be killed performance with this one for sure. Jutes definitely put together some amazing lyrics, and Maphra's performance does it solid.
