Dontnod's games at least recently feel like they're always a step away from greatness. I can't describe it. But, its always that one thread that's missing and you just don't know what it is.
Banishers was the last game i played from them and that was the best for me. That was soo underrated man, I wish more people played that. No i haven't played Life is Strange.
Honestly I was more pulled in by the story from the logs than by the main story of our two protagonists. And yes, Thomas brought something to the game ... and at least I got the feeling we are getting some information. However I also thought if Netflix would want to adapt the story of the Aphelion crew into a seriews (not HOPE-1 ... just to be clear) ... because I honestly believe that if they would make a serie with Phaedra Duan as the main protagonist... it could work.
And honestly I am not sure whether there were multiple Nemesis creature. As I understood, there was only one.
Thank you for your review, ever since the announcement I had a feeling this game wouldn't land well, given DN"s usual audience and I'm a bit sad to see that I was right :( As for your theory, I think the date you saw on the PS Store was a placeholder, the trailers they released only showed release windows for 2026/Spring 2026 Also, it's the DN Montreal studio working on the Netflix game, while the Paris studio worked on Aphelion, so I don't think they were trying to rush this one out. Maybe they had a really tight budget? Who knows. Even though I'm not a big fan of ST (if it does turn out to be based on that IP), I really hope the Netflix project does well so the studio can get back on its feet. :/
I remember starting the game and after 20mins I just sighed and was just… bored. They tried but man, it felt like «oh wow they got stranded on different places? Oh wow I have def not used these game mechanics a billion times before” Basically I have played these games before meme
Just finished this myself, both surprised/not surprised you didn't like it. It's a messy messy game. I will say about the PS5 wishlist thing where it seemingly moved from December into April is that PlayStation doesn't support a release year as a placeholder. So as a compromise, companies use December 31st 20XX. So that's probably all you saw there.
But yeah, back to the game itself, it's really something huh? I think my biggest issue ended up being feeling extremely railroaded into a direction. This was to a point where I felt like the playtesters/designers had moved exclusively down one very specific gameplay path. But if you deviated even slightly it'd just break. Narratively I thought it was pretty ok to even good, the scene where Thomas gets his medical results was real highlight to me. The cinematography was fairly good which helped me push through the less than Interstellar gameplay. I ended up wishing the game had a expanded opening where we could maybe see Earth or at the very least get a feel for Ari and Thomas's relationship, so I could at least feel those stakes once they're separated. That could also help make them more distinct as character wise I found them to be basically the same. Ari is more...introspective? I guess? But that's about it.
Overall, I wish it was better. Also, I still need to play Banishers, which is funny given the reveal trailer managed to make my Mom cry!
Vampyr is Don't Nod's best game. Banishers is up there but in the end it felt like it was trying too much to be like God of War gameplay-wise. And the game was kinda too big for no reason. Excellent story tho.
Apparently Don't Nod spent close to $20+ Million on development and marketing. As of yesterday they had made back a whopping $39k with a peak player count of almost 200. I'd call that a win. 🤷🏾♂️
Sigh.... Something really went wrong with this game. I really want to like it but there really isn't much going for it. I agree with the repetitive climbing with Ariane. I liked Thomas' character and his gameplay sections a lot more. He's got some humor which somehow lifts the mood despite the dire situation they are in.
I think the only standout point of the game for me was Thomas in the medbay getting his imminent death diagnosis from the computer. I felt the despair as he just laid there on the table in silence with his eyes welling up with tears before falling to the sides of his face. And after a moment, he got up and redirected that grief into action that gave Ariane and the human race a chance at that alien planet.
Yeah, I immediately preordered because I was expecting Life is Strange In Space, kinda like how I think of Bloom & Rage as LiS in the 90's lol. But yeah I was very quickly let down by this game, I didn't even make it to the alien life-form.
Watched a Let's Play and some of the investigation stuff reminds me of Tacoma, where you board a space station and try to find out what happened to the crew by looking at and touching all their things and replaying memories through an augmented reality mechanic. It's a lot like Gone Home in space, which is unsurprising since it's from the same team. One of the Lost Records/Open Roads devs was the level designer. I played it 10 years ago and it was ok (good ok if that makes sense). It's probably a bad sign that I saw some of Aphelion's gameplay and was reminded of a better game I forgot about
Not to be annoying but do you know when you’re planning to post your reunion review ? I’m so excited 😭 Your videos have become my go to comfort watches
