The President, Dr. Strangelove and British Officer Mandrake are all the same actor: Peter Sellers.

Based on a hothouse Cold War paperback called Red Alert, a vintage copy of which I am happy to own. The novella was NOT a comedy, it was written straight. Kubrick had a greater vision for commenting on the arms race, took it up a few notches. And so made a classic.

From 1964 through to at least 2000, the plot of this movie was scarily realistic. It came out at the same time as Fail Safe, a serious, dramatic presentation of the same sort of situation. My father was career Air Force, and I was career Army. We lived with this potential reality every day.

The song at the end "We'll meet again" was sung by Vera Lynn, she was a British singer, and the song was a favorite with the British soldiers during WWll. It was also a favorite of my parents, I grew up in Denmark and my parents lived through the German Occupation. Vera Lynn died a few years back I believe she was 102.

A Shot In The Dark was also released in 1964 with Peter Sellers and Elke Sommer where he played Clouseau the detective later famous in Pink Panther series! A funny Blake Edwards movie worth a watch!

Stanley Kubrick was a perfectionist. Every detail in his movies was carefully chosen, from the casting to the background music, to the camera angles. One scene that used an unusual technique was when the soldiers attacked the airbase, handheld cameras were used that made it look like a documentary movie, or a news camera, and that made the scene more realistic, as if it were really happening. Kubrick's movies were full of original approaches to movie making
